Calvin Austin's Injury
New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III was carted off from Tuesday's practice after suffering a non-contact knee injury. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, Austin sustained a "serious knee injury," as reported by a source. Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan detailed that Austin crumbled to the grass while cutting mid-route during 1-on-1 drills and immediately clutched his right knee.
The scene was somber, as described by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News: practice essentially stopped, teammates surrounded Austin, players prayed, and the receivers and corners did not continue the drill. Co-owner John Mara followed Austin's cart in his own cart, got out, and consoled the receiver, tapping him on the helmet and shoulder pads. Austin, a free agent signing this spring, was having a strong camp, averaging over four yards after catch per reception in each of his three seasons in Pittsburgh, where he was also used on jet sweeps and had chemistry with quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Odell Beckham's Opportunity
The injury has shifted the roster calculus for Odell Beckham Jr., who signed a one-year deal with the Giants. Initially, Beckham's path to the final roster was narrow, but Austin's absence has likely opened a spot. According to The New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy, Beckham's targets rose after Austin went down. Dan Duggan of The Athletic noted that Beckham had his most productive day of camp, starting with a vintage one-handed grab in individual drills, and catching two passes from Jaxson Dart and two more from Jameis Winston during team periods, looking like he had an extra gear.
Beckham, 33, had been looking like less than a lock to make the roster. He has been almost exclusively on the outside in camp and preseason, with 48 snaps outside and just one in the slot, a stark contrast to his time with the Miami Dolphins in 2024, where he played 50% of his snaps from the slot. His performance on Tuesday, including explosive plays on crossing routes, may bolster his case.

One more preseason game remains for Beckham to prove he can still be productive in his age-34 season. Beyond his on-field contributions, Beckham could serve as a veteran presence and mentor to young receivers like Malik Nabers and Jalin Hyatt.
