Incident Overview
Three people were left seriously injured in Ghaziabad on Sunday night after a speeding car allegedly rammed into them at a petrol pump near Silver City on GT Road. The incident followed an argument over the vehicle's parking position at the fuel dispenser, according to multiple reports.
The incident took place in the Kotwali area shortly after 10 pm, when a group of allegedly intoxicated youths arrived at the petrol pump. A pump worker, Manoj Kumar, asked the driver to reposition his white Maruti Swift correctly near the dispenser for refuelling. Instead of complying, the driver, later identified as Deepu, allegedly accelerated the car while turning it, ramming into Manoj and two customers, Sanjesh Kumar and Vikash Kumar, before fleeing the scene.
CCTV Footage and Injuries
Security camera footage from the petrol pump captured the entire incident, showing the car crashing into the group before speeding off. The footage showed the car hitting four people, with three left seriously injured, as reported by Times Now. According to police, the impact was severe enough to throw one of the victims nearly five feet into the air. Manoj Kumar was allegedly run over in the process.
The CCTV footage also showed one of the victims being thrown a few feet away after the impact, illustrating the severity of the collision.
Victims and Response
All three injured were rushed to the district hospital for treatment. Given the severity of his injuries, Manoj Kumar was later referred to GS Medical College in Pilkhuwa for further treatment. Police said all three victims are currently undergoing treatment. Two diesel dispensing machines at the petrol pump were also damaged in the incident, as noted in the complaint filed by pump manager Anurag Chaudhary.
Arrest and Legal Action
Police arrested the accused, Deepu, on Monday, and the Maruti Swift used in the incident has been seized. ACP (Kotwali) Upasana Pandey confirmed that an FIR has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions relating to rash driving, acts endangering human life or personal safety, and intentional damage to property. Times Now reported that the FIR was registered under Sections 281 (rash driving), 125(a) (acts endangering human life), and 324(4) (intentional property damage).
The complaint filed by the petrol pump manager stated that the occupants of the car were intoxicated. Authorities have not clarified what triggered the initial altercation beyond the parking dispute.
Investigation is underway, with the CCTV footage expected to serve as key evidence in the case.
