Genesis Debuts GV90 Flagship Electric SUV in San Francisco

Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group, has unveiled its flagship large electric SUV, the GV90, at a world premiere event in San Francisco. The new model, which includes a standard GV90 and a GV90 Neolun variant, is the brand's most advanced electric vehicle to date.

The GV90 is powered by a 123.5-kWh high-voltage battery, providing a driving range of 500 kilometers on a single charge for the seven-seat model, based on the company's in-house testing. When using a 350-kW fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 22 minutes.

The Neolun variant features a distinctive design with independently opening hidden B-pillar coach doors, while the standard GV90 comes with conventional swing doors. The GV90 also features a range of advanced technologies, including the world's first roof airbag, multi-chamber air suspension, and a new power supply system. It comes with Pleos Connect, Hyundai Motor Group's in-vehicle infotainment system, as well as Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Engineering Safety in a Pillarless Design

At the heart of the GV90 Neolun's design is the elimination of the conventional B-pillar, creating a wide, unobstructed opening. This pillarless design, which Genesis calls the Arch Gate, is a world-first independently opening coach-door system. However, removing the visible pillar does not sacrifice structural strength, according to Lee Chan-hee, head of Genesis's body design group.

"We moved the structural functions normally handled by the B-pillar into the doors," Lee said. "The hidden B-pillar structure uses two 1.8-gigapascal-strength steel beams arranged vertically and horizontally, with upper stoppers and impact hooks reinforcing the structure."

Genesis has also incorporated a "hidden roll cage"—a separate structural framework built into the body to surround the passenger compartment. Combined with the hidden B-pillar structure, the system is designed to deliver what Genesis describes as class-leading body stiffness.

"We built another structural framework around the passenger compartment inside the body," Lee explained. "This allows us to maintain a high level of body stiffness even with the conventional B-pillar removed."

The door mechanism itself required substantial engineering. A dual-motion hinge supports a rear door weighing nearly 70 kilograms, allowing the door to slide and rotate simultaneously.

"Supporting a door that weighs nearly 70 kilograms while making it perform two different movements was a significant challenge," Lee said. "The dual-motion hinge enables the door to operate smoothly while keeping it stable."

Noise Reduction and Safety Features

Genesis has also applied triple-layer sealing around the doors to block potential paths for wind and road noise. "Even at high speeds, we wanted the cabin to remain quiet and free from wind noise," says the head of the body design group.

The GV90 is equipped with 12 airbags in total, including the world's first roof airbag. Engineers strengthened the vehicle's roof to about 13,924 kilograms-force, a level that is reportedly exceptionally high for its segment, according to Lee Seung-bok, head of the integrated safety development group.

"Rollover accidents do not happen frequently, but when they do, the consequences can be extremely serious," Lee noted.

To protect the battery in a collision, the front of the vehicle uses deflectors to redirect impact forces outward, while subframes and sliders at the bottom help lift the vehicle during a crash before forces reach the battery. This safety architecture enables the pillarless design with high body stiffness.

Perspectives

Genesis engineering leadership

Genesis engineers, including Lee Chan-hee and Lee Seung-bok, emphasize that safety was a top priority in developing the pillarless design. They highlight that structural strength does not rely on a visible B-pillar due to hidden reinforcements. Lee Seung-bok stresses the serious consequences of rollover accidents, which justified the roof-strengthening effort.

Genesis the manufacturer

The company's promotional messaging through Yonhap focuses on the model's debut, its range, and technological firsts, presenting the GV90 as a flagship with practical charging and performance specs.
