European Gas Storage Falls to Multi-Year Low as Injection Slows

European underground gas storage (UGS) levels have slipped to their lowest point in five years, with net injection rates falling to a three-year low in early August, according to TASS calculations based on data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).

As of early August 2026, European UGS facilities were 57.87% full, compared with 70% at the same time last year, containing approximately 63.3 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas—13.6 bcm less than the previous year's stockpiles. Earlier in late July, the same facilities were reported at 55.35% fullness, holding around 60.5 bcm, which was 12.5 bcm below last year's levels. TASS attributed the decline to a slowdown in injection activity, noting that net injection since the beginning of April had reached only 48% of the volumes required for the upcoming winter.

Data from the same source indicated that net injection in early August was running at a three-year low. Since the start of July, the net injection volume was 19% lower than the same period in the previous year, standing at a six-year low for that month.

The European Commission has asked EU member states to ensure their UGS facilities are 90% full between October 1 and December 1 each year, with a 10% flexibility allowance under difficult filling conditions. To meet this standard, net injection into European storage facilities by the start of the 2026-2027 autumn-winter period must reach at least 68 bcm. As of the latest data, Europe had injected 44% of the volumes needed for the upcoming winter, though a subsequent report put that figure at 48%.

The figures underscore the challenges facing Europe as it seeks to build a sufficient gas buffer ahead of the heating season. While the European Commission's targets remain unchanged, the current pace of injection suggests that meeting the 90% threshold will require a significant acceleration in the coming weeks.
