Police seek driver in Garland hit-and-run

Garland police are searching for the driver of a white utility-style work truck that struck and seriously injured a 12-year-old boy on an electric scooter in a crosswalk before fleeing, according to multiple reports.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at North Garland Avenue and Apollo Road, as reported by CBS News, The Dallas Morning News, and FOX 4 News, all citing the Garland Police Department.

The boy was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk while riding an electric scooter when he was hit, police said. He was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Saturday, though he sustained significant injuries, according to all three outlets.

Vehicle and driver description

Police described the suspect vehicle as a white utility-style work truck with four doors and storage compartments along the sides of its bed, as reported by CBS News and The Dallas Morning News. FOX 4 News also reported the vehicle had four doors and side compartments.

The driver was described as a heavy-set man with a short buzz-cut hairstyle, according to police, as reported by all three outlets.

Investigators said the driver briefly stopped after the crash before fleeing south on North Garland Avenue. The truck had been traveling east on Apollo Road before turning south onto North Garland Avenue, police said.

Appeal for information

Garland police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, saw the truck nearby, or has dashcam footage from around the time to call the department's non-emergency line at 972-485-4840.

"Even a small piece of information or video could be important in helping us with this investigation," Garland police spokesman Matt Pesta said in a news release, as quoted by CBS News.

The department is also urging the driver to come forward. "We want to hear from you and give you the opportunity to provide your side of what happened," Pesta said, according to CBS News.

Authorities also asked people who were driving in the area around 8:30 a.m. to review their dashcam footage to see if they captured the truck before or after the crash, as reported by CBS News and The Dallas Morning News.

Police said the truck traveled east on Apollo Road before turning south onto North Garland Avenue, a detail consistent across all three reports.
