Gameplay Trailer Revealed
The first gameplay trailer for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, according to multiple reports. The trailer features characters from the HBO series, including Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Daenerys, and the Night King.
The game, developed by PlaySide Studios, is described as a classic real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros. It appears designed to appeal to both Game of Thrones fans and devotees of games like Warcraft 3 and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth, with hero-led battalions fighting to control castles and land.
Factions and Heroes
Players will command multiple factions, including House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night King's White Walkers, to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and decide who sits the Iron Throne. The armies are led by playable heroes such as Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost, Grey Wind, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Night King, each with unique abilities.
According to a news release from PlaySide, "Forging a path to victory will require players to step into the role of a commander, making key decisions in training units, securing resources, constructing buildings, and claiming territory from opposing forces." The release added, "Each faction offers asymmetric strategies, with unique armies, buildings, mechanics, and playstyles shaped by their identity in the Game of Thrones series. Players must harness these distinct strengths, deploy powerful heroes, and adapt their approach to outplay, outmaneuver, and defeat their enemies."
Changing the Course of History
Polygon noted that players may be able to change the course of events from the Game of Thrones series, offering the possibility of giving a character like Jaime Lannister a different fate than on screen. This suggestion appears based on the game's design, though it has not been confirmed by the developer.
Release and Delay
The game is scheduled to launch in early 2027. Developer PlaySide previously delayed the release window from 2026, explaining, "Time is needed to ensure the game reaches a high level of polish worthy of satisfying both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans," and adding, "We do not take players' patience and support for granted."
Gameplay Modes
InvenGlobal reported that players can conquer the Seven Kingdoms and claim the Iron Throne through solo and multiplayer modes, deploy forces in real-time combat, and experience iconic battles from the series. The game offers a blend of strategic depth and fan service, with mechanics that reward careful planning and adaptation to each faction's strengths.
As the trailer continues to circulate, anticipation builds for a title that aims to capture the political intrigue and large-scale warfare of Westeros in a format familiar to real-time strategy enthusiasts.
