Lieutenant Governor Reviews BRICS Summit Traffic Arrangements
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited the Delhi Traffic Police Headquarters in Todapur on Monday to review traffic preparations for the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in the capital next month. During the visit, Sandhu interacted with officers on issues related to traffic congestion, road safety, and summit arrangements, according to an official statement.
He was briefed on the traffic arrangements being planned by the Delhi Traffic Police for the summit, which will see the presence of Heads of State, dignitaries, and top delegates from foreign countries. The police assured him of "foolproof, tech-driven arrangements" for the safe and seamless movement of foreign Heads and dignitaries, as well as the Prime Minister and other Ministers, while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public.
Sandhu directed senior traffic police leadership to work in close coordination with other agencies to ensure smoother traffic movement. He also stressed stricter enforcement of road discipline and proactive management of congestion hotspots. He emphasized the importance of citizen participation and seamless inter-agency coordination in building safer roads, more efficient traffic management, and greater public confidence, underlining that a coordinated, technology-enabled, and citizen-centric approach is essential for a safer and better-managed Delhi.
Officials present at the meeting included Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhry, Joint Commissioner Sanjay Tyagi, three Additional Commissioners of Police (Traffic), and Deputy Commissioners of Police (Traffic). During the meeting, Sandhu was briefed about various schemes being implemented by the Delhi Traffic Police, including Traffic Pathshala to sensitise violators and Traffic Panchayat to involve civic agencies and other stakeholders in traffic management.
Traffic Advisory for Motorcade Rehearsals
Separately, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory on Monday warning commuters of route diversions and regulated movement across key corridors in New Delhi on September 1, 2026, in view of full-scale motorcade rehearsals ahead of the BRICS Summit 2026. According to the advisory, traffic restrictions and regulated movements will remain in effect between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM along designated high-security VVIP routes.
"On September 1, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, traffic diversions and regulated movement will be in place across key routes in New Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time, use public transport—especially the Metro—and follow diversion routes and instructions of traffic personnel. Emergency and essential service vehicles will be provided priority passage," Delhi Traffic Police posted on X.
The affected roads include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road, Moti Lal Nehru Marg, Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, Brig. Hoshiyar Singh Marg, and Africa Avenue Road. Additional routes under regulation include Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Ranjeet Singh Flyover, Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Kemal Attaturk Marg, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Josef Broz Tito Marg, and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.
The advisory highlighted that bus routes may experience diversions during VVIP carcade movements. However, metro services will continue to operate normally across all stations without any disruption. Taxis and auto-rickshaws may also face temporary route diversions.
Commuters have been strongly urged to opt for public transport, particularly the Delhi Metro, to avoid delays and navigate the capital smoothly. The advisory also noted that parking is prohibited within 200 meters of controlled roads, and vehicles operating essential services will have uninterrupted access.
Citizens are asked to report suspicious activity to the nearest police officer. Real-time updates will be provided on official Delhi Police social media platforms.
