A New Chapter in West London

Fulham and Chelsea renew hostilities at Craven Cottage on Monday night in a west London derby that brings together two clubs at the start of new eras. The fixture marks the first competitive match in charge for both Xabi Alonso at Chelsea and Alvaro Arbeloa at Fulham, with the two managers having previously been teammates at Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The match concludes the opening round of Premier League fixtures and carries added significance for Alonso, who has been tasked with reviving Chelsea's fortunes after a disappointing 10th-place finish last season. The Blues have invested heavily in the summer, headlined by the British record £117million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as reported by the Evening Standard.

Chelsea have also been active in the transfer market, aiming to strengthen a squad that underperformed last term. The club's hierarchy will be expecting an immediate response, particularly with no European football to distract from domestic duties this season.

A Shared History, A New Rivalry

Alonso and Arbeloa's careers have been inextricably linked since their days together at Liverpool under Rafa Benitez. The pair won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, and played together at Real Madrid after both moved to the Bernabeu.

Their managerial paths have now crossed in the Premier League, with both taking their first top-flight jobs in England after brief and turbulent spells in charge of the Spanish giants. Alonso succeeded Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid following his departure from Bayer Leverkusen, but lasted only six months, winning 24 of his 32 matches before leaving by mutual consent in January, as reported by FourFourTwo.

Arbeloa replaced Alonso from the club's B team but also struggled, and after just 19 league matches, he stood down at the end of the season, having accumulated four points fewer than Barcelona during his tenure. Reports of dressing-room tensions and question marks over performances in big matches hastened his exit, with some reports linking his demise to the scepticism of star forward Kylian Mbappe.

Benitez Backs Alonso

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who managed both players at Anfield, has expressed surprise at Arbeloa's rise to the top level of management. "Alonso, yes. Arbeloa, not really," Benitez said. "For me, Arbeloa was a surprise."

Benitez, speaking to BBC Sport, added that Arbeloa's experience is "shorter" than Alonso's but that the pair share a strong friendship that will be put aside on Monday. "They know the Premier League, but Arbeloa's experience is shorter than Xabi's. We need to know how he can cope outside Real Madrid, which protects you in a way. Outside, you are on your own."

Both managers live close to each other in Cobham, Surrey, with their children attending the same school. They are also former international teammates and good friends, though that friendship will be tested on the touchline.

What The Numbers Say

Chelsea will be bidding to avoid equalling a 27-year streak of failing to win their opening Premier League fixture, according to Sports Mole. The Blues have not won their first match of a league season since the 2022-23 campaign and have drawn their last two opening-day matches at home to Liverpool and Crystal Palace, respectively.

Fulham, meanwhile, have won just once in their last six opening-day matches in the top flight and have lost all three of their previous top-flight openers against London opposition. However, the Cottagers will take heart from their recent home form, having picked up 18 points from nine matches at Craven Cottage since the turn of the year—only Manchester United have won more home games in that period.

Chelsea have not won an away league match since March 4, when they beat Aston Villa 4-1, a run that will be a concern for Alonso. The game kicks off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, with coverage starting at 6:30pm.
