A Spec Bump for the Entry-Level Convertible
Framework has given its compact 12.2-inch convertible laptop a significant hardware refresh. The updated Framework Laptop 12 now features Intel's Core Series 3 processors — also known as Wildcat Lake — replacing the original 13th Gen chips. The new processor lineup includes the Core 3 304, Core 5 320, and Core 7 350, built on Intel's 18A process node with Cougar Cove performance cores and Darkmont low-power efficiency cores, as well as upgraded Xe3 integrated graphics.
According to Framework, the new chips are purpose-built for smaller, lower-power, entry-priced laptops. In a statement, the company explained: "When we launched the original Framework Laptop 12 last year, we brought in 13th Gen Intel Core processors to hit the necessary price and performance balance. Core Series 3 is purpose built for smaller, lower-power, entry-priced laptops. Unlike past processors for the entry segment, that doesn't mean compromising the architecture. Core Series 3 is essentially a shrunk down version of the Core Ultra Series 3 platform we use on Framework Laptop 13 Pro."
Hot Hardware reported that the new processors share the same Cougar Cove P-cores, Darkmont LP-E cores, and Xe3 graphics found in the more expensive Laptop 13 Pro, just in fewer numbers. Framework's pitch is that since many workloads are single-threaded, the performance is "nearly the same" between the two models.
Battery Life and Performance Claims
Framework claims the new architecture delivers up to a 70% increase in battery life when streaming 4K content from Netflix, compared to the Core i5-1334U in the original Laptop 12. Engadget noted that the company specifically mentions the Core 5 model demonstrated 70% better battery life while streaming Netflix versus the Core i5 version of the original Laptop 12. Both outlets attribute these claims to Framework.
Engadget also reported that pre-built versions of the new laptop come with either a Core 3, Core 5, or Core 7 chip, with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of RAM respectively. The publication noted that starting at 8GB of memory "isn't ideal," possibly reflecting broader memory market pressures.
Connectivity and Input Upgrades
Beyond the processor change, the Laptop 12 receives several connectivity improvements. According to Hot Hardware, the two rear expansion slots now support full Thunderbolt 4, enabling external GPUs or dual 4K 60Hz displays, while all four slots retain USB power delivery. Engadget corroborated that Thunderbolt 4 is available on two of the four hot-swappable Expansion Cards.
The laptop also supports faster DDR5-6400 memory and an upgradeable Intel BE213 Wi-Fi 7 module, as reported by Hot Hardware. Framework has addressed two community requests with optional hardware: a fingerprint reader integrated into the power button and a single-zone backlit keyboard running open-source ZMK firmware, both detailed by Hot Hardware. Engadget added that the 12.2-inch display has not been improved, but can be configured with the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader.
Linux Focus and Community Response
Framework continues its strong Linux push. Engadget reported that over 80% of original Laptop 12 owners are running Linux, and the company has decided to offer pre-built configurations preloaded with Fedora Linux. According to Hot Hardware, the Fedora configuration includes KDE Plasma with touch and stylus optimizations. Engadget noted that the pre-built Core 5 and Core 7 models running Linux feature both the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader by default.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing details were reported by both outlets. The DIY Edition is priced at $549 for the Core 3 model, $779 for the Core 5, and $999 for the Core 7. Prebuilt Fedora configurations cost $699, $1,099, and $1,399 for the Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7 respectively. The previous-generation 13th Gen model at entry price drops to $499, as noted by Hot Hardware.
For existing Laptop 12 owners, Hot Hardware reported that standalone Core Series 3 motherboards will start at $299. Preorders are live, with initial shipments scheduled for October, according to both sources.
