A former television news anchor has admitted to killing her mother in Kansas, a case that has drawn attention to both her past career and her mental health history.
Angelynn "Angie" Mock, 48, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder in the death of her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, on Oct. 31, 2025, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Mock faces life in prison with eligibility for parole after 25 years.
The Incident
Officers were called to the Wichita home Mock and Avers shared with Mock's stepfather around 7:50 a.m. on Oct. 31. When they arrived, they found Mock outside with cuts on her hands, according to the Wichita Police Department. Avers was taken to a hospital with multiple stab wounds and later died.
Mock was at her mother's home and stabbed her multiple times while she was still in bed, according to reports. She then left the house and went to a nearby neighbor, asking them to call 911, and told the neighbor she had acted in self-defense.
Statements and Mental Health History
Mock made several statements indicating she believed her mother was the devil and that she killed her to "save herself," according to a probable cause affidavit.
Mock's stepfather told KAKE-TV that she had been diagnosed with mental illness and suffered from delusions and depression. He also said she was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but the diagnosis was later changed to schizoaffective disorder.
A judge initially ordered Mock placed in a state hospital for mental health treatment and evaluation. However, another judge reversed the ruling, finding her competent to stand trial.
Career Background
Mock worked as a news anchor and reporter for Fox 2 in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015, according to her LinkedIn profile. Prior to that, she worked as a morning anchor from 2007 to 2011 at KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City. She also held other reporting stints in Minnesota, Montana, and Nebraska.

Mock is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 5.
