Historic Upset in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators soccer team delivered a landmark upset Sunday, defeating No. 3 and defending national champion Florida State 3-1 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Seminoles and marked Florida's first win in the rivalry since 2015, as reported by multiple outlets.

The Gators (2-1) played before a record crowd of 1,632, breaking the soccer attendance record at the stadium. The win came in just the third game under new head coach Nick Zimmerman, who took over a program that has struggled since Becky Burleigh's retirement in 2020.

"The energy of the team was absolute, whether you played no minutes or 90 minutes," Zimmerman said after the match. "This is a huge win for our program, our conference, and we're going to enjoy it."

Taylor's Two Goals Lead the Way

Kyra Taylor, a transfer who followed Zimmerman from Mississippi State, scored twice for the Gators. Her first goal came in the 22nd minute, when Mia Gray headed a corner kick from Zoe Main to Taylor's foot for an easy tap-in, according to The Independent Florida Alligator. It was the first goal Florida had scored against FSU since 2021, and the first goal the Seminoles had conceded this season.

Taylor added her second goal in the second half, though reports differ on the exact minute. The Independent Florida Alligator placed it in the 61st minute, while the Naples Daily News reported it in the 62nd. Montelene Dymond also scored for Florida, with the Alligator reporting a 79th-minute strike and the Gainesville Sun placing it in the 78th. Ryder Ajeto scored for Florida State in the closing minutes, with the Alligator citing the 82nd minute and the Naples Daily News the 83rd.

Emmanuel's Saves Prove Crucial

Goalkeeper Jayden Emmanuel, making her first start of the season, recorded a series of key saves, including a one-on-one stop against Shaneil Buckley in the first half. Zimmerman called that save "big time," and Emmanuel described her mindset afterward: "My mind was kind of blank. I hit a flow state."

The Naples Daily News reported that Emmanuel made four saves in total, while the Alligator highlighted her performance in the first half, when she made two saves before FSU's goalkeeper Kate Ockene made four of her own.

A Program Rebuilding

Florida's win was all the more significant given its recent history against FSU. The Seminoles had won eight straight in the rivalry, outscoring Florida 5-0 in last season's meeting. FSU also came into the match on a 36-game nonconference unbeaten streak, a run the Naples Daily News noted dated back to 2019. The loss also ended a 13-game unbeaten run and a nine-game win streak for the Seminoles, according to the Naples Daily News.

FSU (3-1 per the Alligator, or 3-0-1 per the Naples Daily News) had outscored opponents 9-0 in its first three matches but struggled to create chances against Florida despite controlling possession. The Seminoles, who have won five national championships in the last dozen years, including two under coach Brian Pensky, lost a significant amount of talent from last season's title team. Pensky now faces the challenge of integrating 16 new faces, with only four starters returning from 2025, as reported by the Naples Daily News.

New Coach, New Identity

Zimmerman, who took over after a series of coaching changes, has emphasized building a new identity. "It's about identity and DNA," he said, according to the Gainesville Sun. "Bodies on the box." His approach has already shown results after the Gators scored six goals in their first two games, though they lost a high-scoring affair to UCF 4-3 despite taking twice as many shots.

Zimmerman's most significant change was in goal, where Emmanuel's performance alongside a defense that started four freshmen helped contain an FSU attack that had been prolific. Lael Hill, one of those freshmen, drew praise from Zimmerman for her versatility, and her father, NBA legend Grant Hill, was in attendance.

"Beating a legacy and belief," Grant Hill said of the win, as quoted by the Gainesville Sun.

Looking Ahead

Florida next plays Jacksonville University on Thursday at 6 p.m., while Florida State faces No. 25 Georgia on Sept. 3. Zimmerman, reflecting on the win's significance, spoke of restoring the Gators' legacy: "That's what we're here to do," he said, according to the Gainesville Sun.

For now, the Gators and their fans can celebrate a result that many described as stunning. As Zimmerman put it, "This is a huge win for our program."
