Heupel Announces Brandon as Starter

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel announced on Aug. 24 that true freshman Faizon Brandon will be the starting quarterback for the Volunteers' Week 1 game against Furman. Brandon is the first true freshman to start a season opener for Tennessee since 2004.

"Faizon had earned the right to be the starter Week 1," Heupel said, according to Knoxville News-Sentinel. "Love what the group has done, how they've competed, grown. Love how they competed and supported each other throughout the course of training camp."

Brandon's Attributes Praised by Teammates and Coach

Teammates have praised Brandon's elusiveness, with edge rusher Jordan Norman comparing him to former Heisman winner Lamar Jackson. "I would say, honestly, it's like trying to tackle Lamar Jackson," Norman said, a Tulane transfer. "Somebody who can run, shake you."

Defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby noted Brandon's ability to avoid pressure. "I would say his athletic ability is definitely his strong suit and just being able to avoid people in the pocket," Weathersby said.

Heupel cited Brandon's control, command, fundamentals, and decision-making as key reasons for the decision. "I don't think there's just one thing," Heupel said, per Knoxville News-Sentinel, listing traits such as understanding of the offense, technique, and pocket awareness.

Competition and Future Implications

Brandon beat out sophomore George MacIntyre, who was considered the leader during the spring. Sports Illustrated's analysis suggests Brandon's "upside" and potential long-term impact influenced the decision, especially with the new five-for-five ruling allowing a fifth season of college football. Brandon was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 player in his class, known for his accuracy and ability to throw on the run.

Heupel acknowledged the difficulty for quarterbacks not starting but emphasized the need for continued competition. "The expectation at the quarterback position, just like at every position, is guys continue to grow, work, and compete every day," he said.

Looking Ahead to Furman

The Volunteers are set to face Furman in their season opener after completing two scrimmages. Beyond quarterback, projected starters include running back DeSean Bishop, wide receivers Mike Matthews, Radarious Jackson, and Braylon Staley, and tight end DaSaahn Brame, according to Sports Illustrated's projections.
