A Disastrous Start for Manchester United

Manchester United's Premier League season began with a shock 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, a result that has already triggered intense scrutiny of Michael Carrick's side. First-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, both from set-pieces, condemned the Red Devils to their first-ever opening-day loss to a promoted team, a sobering statistic given the club had previously won ten and drawn three such fixtures.

Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, converting the rebound after Senne Lammens saved Oli McBurnie's effort from a corner. Mendy doubled Hull's advantage in the 38th minute, heading in a free-kick delivery from Regan Slater. The Tigers' victory was their first league win over United in 52 years, a fact that underscored the magnitude of the upset. According to Opta data, United dominated possession with 65% but managed just 0.30 expected goals from four shots, while Hull posted 0.78 xG from three shots on target.

Carrick's Response and Shaw's Admission

Michael Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim in January and guided United to a third-place finish last season, dismissed suggestions that his players lacked passion. "Oh come on, that's ridiculous," he said. "Just because you get beaten doesn't mean you don't care about it." He attributed the defeat to set-piece moments rather than a lack of intensity, adding, "Their two goals came from set plays. Other than that we had opportunities."

Luke Shaw was more self-critical, telling Stan Sports that the team knew Hull's strengths but failed to prepare adequately. "Really disappointing. It's not us and we knew it was coming," Shaw said. "I think as a whole, as a group, collectively, we could prepare better. Especially knowing how good they are at set-plays." He also admitted the side lacked "cutting edge" going forward, but insisted there were "no excuses" for losing to Hull.

Rooney's Scathing Verdict

Wayne Rooney, United's all-time top scorer, was unimpressed by both the performance and Fernandes' post-match comments. Appearing on Match of the Day, Rooney described the defending for Hull's second goal as "schoolboy," singling out Shaw for dropping too deep and playing Mendy onside. "This is schoolboy defending from Luke Shaw," Rooney said. "Man Utd had a good line, Hull would have been waiting for this all day, Luke Shaw drops in, he's five yards behind his backline."

Rooney also labelled Fernandes' assessment of the defeat as "strange." Fernandes had told TNT Sports that United repeated the "same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball." He noted that Hull's goalkeeper had the most touches in the first 20 minutes and called for more pressing and aggression. Rooney countered that United were too passive, sitting in a mid-block and winning only two balls in Hull's final third. He suggested Hull had used United's pre-season defeat to AC Milan as a blueprint, deploying wing-backs to exploit the same weaknesses.

Fernandes Under Fire from Fans

Fernandes' comments did not sit well with a section of the United fanbase, particularly as statistics showed he lost possession 22 times during the match, while Shaw lost it 23 times. Social media erupted with accusations of hypocrisy, with some supporters calling for the captain to leave. The backlash came despite Fernandes' stellar previous season, in which he recorded 21 assists, and reports that he had reopened contract talks with Ineos earlier in the week. Hull manager Sergej Jakirović, meanwhile, revealed his side had practiced set-pieces on Friday specifically to "punish" United, a plan that paid off handsomely.

Looking Ahead

Carrick made a double substitution in the 66th minute, bringing on Benjamin Šeško and Kobbie Mainoo for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but the introduction failed to change the outcome. "We did some good things today and it will get lost," Carrick said. "We have to find answers but because we lose one game, it doesn't mean everything needs dissecting." He added that the result would not knock the side's confidence.

United will look to bounce back when they host another promoted side, Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford on August 30. With Hull widely tipped to finish bottom this season, the pressure is already mounting on Carrick's team to respond.
