Brawl Erupts in Upper Deck at Rate Field

A fight broke out in the upper deck at Rate Field during the eighth inning of Sunday's series finale between the New York Mets and the Chicago White Sox. Videos posted to social media show multiple people throwing punches, with one man appearing to leap down two rows of seating to stomp on a fellow spectator before stadium security intervened, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

The New York Post described the scene as spanning nearly half of section 518, with about a dozen fans involved in punching, shoving, and stomping. Videos from multiple angles, cited by the Post, show the altercation moving dangerously close to the railing at the front of the section.

One particularly striking moment, captured in the videos, shows a fan jumping down two rows and landing feet-first on a man's stomach after he had been pushed to the ground. The man then grabbed his attacker by the shirt and flung him down another row of seats, losing his own shirt in the process, according to the Post.

Essentially Sports reported that it took about 15 seconds for ushers to reach section 518, and that the fight involved more than 12 individuals punching each other. The outlet also noted that some fans seemed to enjoy the brawl more than the game itself, and that a man holding a toddler was seen beside the fight. The child was not harmed.

"There's a Kid!" Bystanders React

As the fight escalated, some bystanders fled the scene, with one shouting, "There's a kid!" while others pulled out their phones to record the incident, according to multiple reports. A loud gasp could be heard from around the ballpark as the crowd turned its attention away from the game, the New York Post noted.

Barstool Sports shared footage of the incident on X, with the caption: "WE GOT JUMP KICKS FROM THE TOP ROPE AT THE WHITE SOX GAME," as reported by Essentially Sports.

Security Response and Aftermath

Security guards, some wielding handcuffs, eventually arrived to break up the fight. However, fans continued to point and shout at each other, with one man defying his handler to get in one last hit before being held back by the arm, according to the New York Post.

A White Sox spokesperson said Sunday's incident resulted in "multiple ejections and an arrest," and added: "Fan safety is paramount at the ballpark, and we are grateful to our security staff and law enforcement partners who helped address the situation," as quoted by the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago police said one man was arrested outside the stadium Sunday afternoon and charged with battery, the Tribune reported.

The fight followed a similar incident last week during the City Series at Wrigley Field, when three people were arrested at the stadium, though sources said those arrests were not connected to that altercation, according to the Chicago Tribune. The New York Post noted that this was the second melee involving White Sox fans in less than a week, with the previous one occurring during the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field.

Game Context and Fan Dynamics

The fight occurred during the White Sox's 2-1 win over the Mets, as reported by the New York Post. Essentially Sports noted that the White Sox lead the AL Central by 3.5 games over the Cleveland Guardians.

Unlike last week's brawl at Wrigley Field, which was between rival fans, this one appeared to be "mostly friendly fire between White Sox fans," according to the New York Post.

The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, with both the New York Post and Essentially Sports noting that it is not known how or why the fight started.
