US Strikes on Iran Enter Eleventh Night, Explosions Reported in Tabriz and Southern Cities
The United States military has launched an eleventh consecutive night of strikes against Iran, with explosions reported in northwestern Iran’s Tabriz region, as well as the capital Tehran and several southern cities, according to Al Jazeera and the Jerusalem Post.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes began at 7 pm Eastern Time (2300 GMT) on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera. “The strikes are designed to continue degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a statement cited by Al Jazeera.
Residents of northeastern Tehran reported hearing air defence activity, the Fars news agency reported, adding that several explosions were also heard around Sirik in southern Iran. Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported explosions in parts of Bushehr, also in southern Iran.
An attack on Tabriz, if confirmed, would mark a departure from the general trend of the latest round of attacks, which have largely focused on southern Iran and the area around the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera noted.
Separately, the Jerusalem Post reported that several explosions were heard in the southern Iranian cities of Sirik and Bushehr on Thursday morning, according to local media. The Deputy Governor of Khuzestan province reported that a location near the southwestern Iranian city of Ahwaz was targeted in US missile attacks, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
In a later report, the Jerusalem Post said explosions were heard in the southern Iranian cities of Bandar Abbas, Abu Musa, Kish Island, Abadan, Bushehr, and Qeshm Island, according to Iranian state media Press TV. The strikes were carried out in response to “yesterday’s attempted Iranian attacks on US forces based in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said in a post on X/Twitter, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
The Deputy Governor of Hormozgan province said the US was attacking areas surrounding Qeshm Island, with Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reporting three explosions on the island, according to the Jerusalem Post.
The US and Iran are competing for control of the vital waterway in the Gulf, with attacks resuming following the breakdown of a June 17 memorandum of understanding agreed between the two sides, Al Jazeera reported. Earlier on Tuesday, the Kuwaiti army said its air defences were intercepting an Iranian drone attack. Iran has repeatedly attacked Gulf countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, since the resumption of US attacks this month, according to Al Jazeera.
