Incident Overview

A 37-year-old man died on Tuesday after falling from the fourth floor of the Le Meridien hotel in central Delhi, according to police. The man, identified as Divij Maria, was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The incident took place around 3 pm, as reported by Hindustan Times, while The Times of India noted that police received information about a person having jumped from the hotel's fourth-floor poolside.

Police Accounts and Investigation

Police said the man appeared to have died by suicide, but underlined that investigators have not yet come across a suicide note. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for New Delhi district, Sachin Sharma, told Hindustan Times that the man, who was receiving treatment for depression for the last few months, was reported to have jumped from the fourth floor. "As per preliminary enquiry, he had left his job at a company in Gurugram around six months ago... He was also married," Sharma added.

Hotel staff told police that the man fell on the deck near the hotel's outdoor swimming pool, according to Hindustan Times. The Times of India reported that the man had left his job at a Gurgaon-based company around six months ago and had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past few months. Both outlets reported that the man was married; The Times of India also noted that he was a resident of New Delhi.

Police cordoned off parts of the hotel for forensic analysis and are interviewing the man's family, as reported by Hindustan Times. The body has been preserved for post-mortem examination. A formal inquiry has been initiated into the circumstances surrounding the death, said Hindustan Times. The Times of India reported that inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are being conducted and further inquiry is underway.

The man had been a former financial consultant, as stated by Hindustan Times. No suicide note has been found. Both newspapers described the hotel as a luxury hotel in Lutyens' Delhi, though The Times of India noted it as a five-star hotel. DCP Sachin Sharma provided details of the incident, according to Hindustan Times.
