IDF Chief of Staff Pledges Justice for October 7 Perpetrators

IDF Chief of General Staff -Gen. Eyal Zamir said on Wednesday while conducting an operational assessment in the Gaza Strip that the IDF "will not relent until we bring every person who played a part in the [October 7] massacre to justice." Zamir's remarks were reported by the Jerusalem Post. He explained, "We are implementing the security strategy we defined, not only here, but along all of the State of Israel's borders." He thanked the IDF's Southern Command for maintaining a "sustained offensive approach" and acting "to protect the residents of the communities near the Gaza" area.

Zamir spoke on August 5, 2026, the day that would have been Ariel Bibas' seventh birthday, and mentioned "the images from the communities, the Bibas family, the surveillance soldiers, and all the victims of the October 7th massacre" as being "before our eyes every day." He said, "We have struck Hamas, significantly weakened it, and fundamentally changed the security reality." Zamir added, "The IDF will continue to operate proactively and according to the principle we established, to remove threats and, in every situation, protect the communities and their residents."

Regional Security and Syria

Earlier in the same week, Zamir warned during a visit to southern Syria that Israel would not allow hostile forces to establish themselves along its borders. The Jerusalem Post reported that Zamir held an operational situational assessment and toured southern Syria. He said, "We see what is happening and are monitoring the changes on the Syrian front, and we must prepare accordingly. We will not allow hostile forces to establish themselves on our borders, and we will know how to use our power precisely where and when it is needed." He also said, "We must prevent the development of terrorist threats while at the same time preventing the emergence of a significant military threat on our borders."

The Jerusalem Post also reported that on Tuesday the IDF struck the Abu al-Duhur military airfield in Syria's Idlib. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the IDF struck a Syrian military base after Jerusalem had given Damascus several warnings about Turkey's military presence in Syria. In a Wednesday post on X/Twitter, Netanyahu wrote that Israel "made the message clear: Don't" and said, "We will not tolerate a Turkish military entrenchment in Syria that threatens Israel." The Prime Minister's Office said that Syria was on the verge of breaching a status quo in security matters by allowing Turkish troops on the ground.

Meeting with US Air Force Chief

The IDF's top general also met with US Air Force Chief of Staff Ken Wilsbach last week to discuss the regional situation, as the Iran war passed its six-month mark. Defense News reported that Wilsbach met with Zamir and Israeli Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Omar Tishler on Aug. 23. The IDF announced the meeting in a Wednesday social media post with a photo of Wilsbach and Zamir shaking hands. Wilsbach confirmed the meeting on his own social media, saying the three discussed "shared priorities for regional security" and "opportunities to deepen cooperation." The IDF said the groups advanced "learning from the joint campaign."

The Jerusalem Post noted that the meeting came as US President Donald Trump has shifted away from military threats to boosting economic sanctions against Iran to try to achieve nuclear and other concessions. The newspaper also observed that Wilsbach's visit was unusual, as generally CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper or CENTCOM Air Force Chief Daniel Lasica would be expected to make such personal visits, and it was unclear whether Wilsbach visited because of elevated cooperation or because Lasica had recently taken office. The officials discussed their assessments of the regional situation, including Iran and other security threats, advancing lessons from the joint campaign and future areas of cooperation.

Gaza Operations and Casualties

The Jerusalem Post reported that over the weekend the IDF carried out strikes in the Gaza Strip, killing several Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists, including Mahmoud Fatair, a commander in PIJ's Central Gaza Brigade who infiltrated Israel on October 7 and took part in holding Rom Braslavski. Zamir emphasized "The Gaza front is part of a multi-front effort" and said, "Last week I met with the troops in southern Lebanon, and here I see the same spirit. It is this spirit that enables us to continue implementing the principle we established and to maintain the initiative in our hands." He added, "We will not allow a threat to emerge on our borders like the one we experienced during the October 7 massacre."

Defense News reported that the Iran war, which began on Feb. 28, has consisted of dual airstrikes from both US and Israeli forces, with US aircraft such as the B-1B Lancer, B-52 Stratofortress, F-15E Strike Eagle, KC-135 Stratotanker, F-35A Lightning II and A-10 Thunderbolt II. The publication stated that 18 US service members have died since the war began, though the Pentagon lowered the number to 14 after reclassifying four casualties.
