Ethan Nwaneri has completed a season-long loan move from Arsenal to Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga club paying the entirety of the 19-year-old's wages. The deal, which does not include a purchase option, was finalised on Deadline Day, with Nwaneri flying to Germany to undergo a medical and sign the contract.
Loan details and recall clause
Arsenal blocked a request for a purchase option and included a recall clause in the agreement, according to CBS Sports sources. The clause carries no conditions and can be activated at any time during the January transfer window. Arsenal still view Nwaneri's long-term future as with the club, with all parties reportedly intending for the 19-year-old to spend the entire Bundesliga campaign in Germany.
The move brings to a close a long pursuit by the German club, who had hoped to sign Nwaneri last summer before he agreed new terms with the Gunners. Dortmund stepped up their interest after new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which opened the door for a formal loan offer.
The deal does not include any obligation or option for Dortmund to make the move permanent next summer, and the club were unable to secure a purchase option during negotiations.
'Needs to play football'
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has faced a logjam in attacking midfield, with Bukayo Saka, Max Dowman, Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke among the options vying for minutes in the No. 10 and right-wing positions. The Arsenal manager had suggested last month that Nwaneri might need to leave to continue his development.
"I want him to be at the club, but something is in the medium and long-term, what is the best for the player as well," Arteta said.
"Ethan needs to play football. If he stays here, it's because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise, it's just something that is not good for anybody," he added.
Career context
The loan comes after Nwaneri spent the second half of last season at Marseille, where he made nine appearances and scored twice. That spell unravelled, however, after Roberto De Zerbi was sacked by the French side, leaving Nwaneri with less than three hours of competitive football thereafter.
Nwaneri, who made his senior debut for Arsenal against Brentford in September 2022, will wear the No. 18 shirt at Dortmund. He is one of four attacking players to leave the Emirates in the final hours of the transfer window, with Gabriel Martinelli reportedly set to join Al-Hilal for $81 million, Gabriel Jesus joining Barcelona for $17.4 million, and Fabio Vieira returning to Hamburg for $10.4 million. Arsenal have retained sell-on clauses in each deal, according to reports.
