SpaceX to Manufacture Its Own Gas Turbine Components
SpaceX is building a specialized foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to manufacture gas turbine blades and vanes, a strategic move aimed at addressing a critical bottleneck in power generation for artificial intelligence data centers. CEO Elon Musk confirmed the plans on social media platform X on Saturday, stating that natural gas will remain necessary to supplement solar power for several years.
"The limiting factor for nat gas turbine production is casting the blades & vanes," Musk wrote. "By doing in-house casting at SpaceX, we can accelerate nat gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months, which is a profound game-changer."
The facility will be located roughly 48 kilometers east of Austin, adjacent to an existing Starlink manufacturing plant. According to reports, SpaceX quietly acquired approximately 830 acres of land in the area between March and June 2026.
Addressing a Global Supply Chain Bottleneck
The foundry targets a severe supply chain constraint that has stalled power generation required for AI data centers across the United States. Specialized global foundries capable of producing these high-precision components are reportedly fully booked through 2029–2030, leaving energy project backlogs nationwide.
Musk noted that while SpaceX and Tesla are racing to scale their own massive solar panel factories "as fast as possible," this alone would not meet surging electricity demand. "Natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years," he said.
A turbine blade foundry uses advanced casting techniques to produce components for jet engines, aerospace systems, and power-generation gas turbines. The Bastrop facility will cast single-crystal nickel-superalloy components designed to withstand extreme heat between 1,650°C and 1,980°C in turbine hot sections.
The Information first reported on SpaceX's plans. SpaceX has also begun advertising roles for a "blades and vanes foundry" in Bastrop, where the company already manufactures Starlink terminals. One job description stated: "Power generation poses one of the key challenges that could slow the worldwide adoption of AI."
Industry Context and AI Energy Demand
The AI boom has driven a massive buildout of data centers across the US, straining electricity supplies and sparking public backlash. Some AI companies have attempted to address their power needs by building natural gas power plants. OpenAI, Amazon, and Microsoft have all struck partnerships to power data centers with natural gas, while Meta's "Hyperion" data center in northern Louisiana will require 10 new gas power plants to supply it with electricity.
The rush to secure natural gas generators has sparked a global shortage of gas turbines and pushed some aerospace startups to repurpose their jet engines into turbines to fuel AI data centers.
Strategic Synergies with Aerospace Operations
The move highlights a dual utility, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas. In an August report, Jonas noted that Raptor turbine pump castings and data center turbine airfoil components use the same alloys and furnaces, allowing a single foundry to spread fixed costs across both aerospace and AI businesses.
SpaceX has not released an official target date for operational completion of the Bastrop facility, and state environmental regulatory filings for the site remain pending.
