Carter Siblings Return to Walford
Danny Hatchard and Maddy Hill are reprising their roles as Lee and Nancy Carter in EastEnders, with filming already underway and their first scenes set to air later this year. The announcement comes alongside news that Kellie Bright, who plays their mother Linda, is leaving the BBC soap.
Bright has portrayed Linda Carter since December 2013, when she was introduced as one of the new owners of the Queen Vic pub. Linda has four children with her husband Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer, including Lee and Nancy.
"Your Jaws Will Drop"
EastEnders executive producer Ben Wadey, speaking during a Q&A, said viewers will see Linda "at her best" ahead of her exit. He added: "We'll be welcoming Lee and Nancy back into the fold for a period in a story that... I guarantee your jaws will drop when you see the first cliffhanger."
Wadey said he is "absolutely thrilled" to welcome the actors back and teased: "Whilst Linda is delighted to have her children all together again, she's got a lot to catch up on."
Fan Theories on the Reason for Return
While the official reason for the siblings' return has not been disclosed, fans on X, formerly Twitter, have been speculating that a shock family death will bring the Carters together. One fan wrote: "Wild theory: Nancy and Lee come back for Mick's funeral, then Mick turns up alive and all the Carters ride off into the sunset."
Another fan noted that Lee, Nancy, and Johnny last reunited in December 2024 for Linda's special standalone episode, which included her funeral, and suggested they might reunite again for Mick's funeral. A third fan responded: "Lee and Nancy returning……… is this how u tell me u have found his body?!? i can't even… please god no! not my Mick."
The speculation stems from the fate of Mick Carter, who seemingly drowned in the sea during the Christmas Day episode in 2022. He dived into the ocean to rescue a pregnant Janine Butcher, played by Charlie Brooks, after their car plunged off a cliff. Mick's body was never found, and he was presumed dead.
Character Histories and Actor Reactions
Lee Carter was involved in storylines including a turbulent relationship with Whitney Dean, played by Shona McGarty. He left the show in 2017 but made a brief one-off appearance in December 2024. Danny Hatchard said he is "absolutely over the moon to be returning to EastEnders" as Lee, adding: "Albert Square has always felt like a home away from home, so I'm proper buzzing to be back grafting with the Enders family."
Nancy Carter was diagnosed with epilepsy during her time in Walford and navigated romances with Tamwar Masood, played by Himesh Patel, and Zack Hudson, played by James Farrar. Maddy Hill, who left the show in 2022, said: "I am so excited to be returning to Enders for a short stint and stepping back into Nancy's shoes. I've missed her! I'm especially looking forward to..."
EastEnders airs on RTÉ One and BBC One Monday to Thursday.
