Fangio Acknowledges Concern Over Greenard's Week 1 Availability as PUP Stint Lengthens

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio acknowledged concern about outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard's availability for the regular-season opener, raising questions about the swift return anticipated when the team acquired him this offseason.

Greenard, who has not practiced since training camp began, was placed on the physically unable to perform list last month due to a pectoral injury. When asked during a press conference whether he is concerned about Greenard missing the start of the regular season, Fangio reportedly said, "Yeah," a response Heavy described as a "one-word answer" that left fans concerned.

The Eagles acquired Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings this offseason in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick, as reported by Heavy. He subsequently signed a four-year extension through 2029. Reports differ on the exact value: one source reports the deal at $100 million with $50 million guaranteed, while another states $98 million with $50 million guaranteed. Both accounts confirm the significant guaranteed money.

A Lingering Injury

Fangio provided a more detailed update earlier this week, saying, "I don’t know when Greenard will be back. You know, that injury he got in our weight room is going to take some time to heal." The injury, sustained while lifting weights before training camp, was initially described by general manager Howie Roseman as "not a long-term injury," according to reports from late July.

Greenard, who turned 29, joined the Eagles after a season that ended early due to a shoulder injury sustained in Week 10 against the Ravens and aggravated in Week 15 against the Cowboys. He recorded a 13.5 percent pressure rate in 12 games in 2025, ranking seventh among all linebackers, according to NBC Sports. That production, along with a 12-plus-sack season in two of the previous three years, made him a prized addition.

Defensive Adjustments

With Week 1 against the Washington Commanders just over three weeks away, the Eagles may need to rely on other edge rushers. Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, and Arnold Ebiketie are among the options to fill out the defense's edge in Greenard's absence, as reported by multiple sources.

Fangio, speaking a week ago, emphasized the challenge of a player returning from a layoff: "When he does come back, whenever that is, the thing... you gotta get calloused to playing NFL football. The banging, the running, the change of direction, the fatigue of it. He’s gonna lose that... That’s gonna be something we have to be conscious with him when he does get back."

Both Fangio and the Eagles' medical staff have not indicated a specific timeline for Greenard's return, and it remains unclear if the injury is more serious than initially thought or if he has experienced a setback. For now, the defense presses on, preparing for the season opener with the possibility of being without one of their most important and expensive players.
