Dorchester man arrested after moped knocks down Boston officer

Arrest After Alleged Moped Incident

A 22-year-old Dorchester man was arrested Friday in connection with an incident earlier in the week in which police say he struck a Boston police officer with his moped and fled the scene. Angel Gonzalez was taken into custody after an officer recognized him as the registered owner of a vehicle with an active arrest warrant, according to the Boston Police Department.

Gonzalez faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of personal injury, and failure to stop for police, as reported by boston.com, MassLive, and NBC10 Boston. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Monday, according to MassLive and NBC10 Boston.

The Wednesday Incident

Police say the incident began around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday when an officer was in the area of Franklin Street in Downtown Crossing, an area designated for pedestrians and emergency vehicles only, as reported by MassLive and NBC10 Boston. The officer saw a moped weaving in and out of pedestrians in an attempt to access Washington Street, according to NBC10 Boston. boston.com's account places the officer near Washington Street at around 12:45 p.m.

When the officer approached the moped, the operator accelerated and knocked the officer to the ground, police said. The officer was evaluated at the scene by Boston EMS but declined further medical treatment, according to boston.com and NBC10 Boston.

The Friday Arrest

Around 8:45 p.m. Friday, an officer conducting traffic enforcement in the Theater District was stopped at a red light at Stuart and Washington Streets when they saw a vehicle speeding in the opposite direction, according to boston.com, MassLive, and NBC10 Boston. A query of the vehicle's registration revealed an active arrest warrant for the owner, prompting the officer to pull the vehicle over, police said.

The driver was identified as Gonzalez and confirmed to be the registered owner of the vehicle, after which he was handcuffed, as reported by all three outlets. Attorney information for Gonzalez was not immediately available, according to boston.com and NBC10 Boston.
