Rookie Injury Clouds Dolphins' Preseason Loss to Giants

The Miami Dolphins' decision to rest most of their starters in Saturday's preseason game against the New York Giants did not protect their most promising rookie. Linebacker Trey Moore, listed as a starter on the team's official depth chart ahead of veteran Willie Gay Jr., left the game in the first quarter after landing awkwardly on his left leg while pressuring Giants quarterback Jameis Winston.

Moore had leaped to block Winston's throwing lane and came down hard on his leg. He was helped off the field, unable to put weight on the leg, and was eventually carted to the locker room. Head coach Jeff Hafley said the team would wait for testing to determine the severity, telling reporters on Sunday that Moore will miss "some time." "I don't see him being back soon," Hafley said. "I'm not sure how long it will be. I think we'll determine that later when all the testing is done."

The injury is a significant blow for a defense that had come to rely on Moore's versatility. The fourth-round pick had been moved between edge rusher and off-ball linebacker, and Hafley praised his ability to play multiple roles. In the Dolphins' first preseason game against Washington, Moore was relentless against the run and covered man-to-man on some downs, showing the trust the coaching staff had in him.

Dolphins' Depth and Execution Questioned

Beyond Moore's injury, Saturday's 26-3 loss raised concerns about the Dolphins' depth. Miami had possession for only 19 minutes and managed just 102 total yards to New York's 390. The Giants controlled the ball for 41 minutes and ran 79 plays to Miami's 36.

"The details aren't good enough right now," Hafley said after the game. "That's some guys that we are going to count on for depth. I told them at halftime these are important moments. I want to see who we can count on as we go toward the 53."

The coach cited a litany of self-inflicted mistakes: penalties, turnovers, dropped passes, and special teams errors. In the first half alone, the Dolphins had two holding penalties, a lost fumble by running back Jaylen Wright, and a shanked punt by Bradley Pinion. The second half brought four more penalties, a fumbled snap, and a muffed punt by Tahj Washington near the goal line.

Offensively, the Dolphins struggled to move the ball. Cam Miller completed 6 of 10 passes for 60 yards and added 18 rushing yards, but he was sacked twice. Mark Gronowski took over after halftime and attempted five passes. The Dolphins' top two rushers were their quarterbacks, and the team finished with just 50 rushing yards on 18 carries. Jaylen Wright had nine yards on six carries and lost a fumble, while Ollie Gordon II managed only eight yards on four carries before exiting with a rib injury. Hafley said Gordon was cleared to return but the team held him out.

Wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. provided one of the few bright spots, catching a 30-yard pass one-handed while being interfered with. He finished with two receptions for 32 yards on five targets. Tutu Atwell, however, had no catches and two drops.

Defensively, Jackson Woodard stood out. The undrafted free agent from 2025 had five total tackles, recovered a fumble in the red zone, and made two special teams tackles, one negated by a holding penalty. Willie Gay Jr. led the team with eight tackles, but he also failed to keep contain on Devin Singletary's 13-yard touchdown run.

Injury Updates and Roster Implications

The Dolphins left the game with several other injuries. Ronnie Harrison Jr. is likely out next week with a hamstring injury, while Quinn Ewers could return to practice this week after a groin issue kept him out of the Giants game. Hafley also noted that Keith Cooper Jr. has made significant progress in camp.

With the regular season less than three weeks away, Moore's injury could force the Dolphins to adjust their plans at linebacker. Sports Illustrated reported that Moore is the only player on the roster listed as an edge/linebacker, and the team's other options at the position include Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, Gay, Harrison, and Woodard. If Moore is placed on injured reserve before the Aug. 30 roster cuts, he would be done for the season unless designated to return later.

The Dolphins close their preseason Friday against the Atlanta Falcons at 7 p.m. ET, before rosters must be trimmed to 53 by Aug. 30. Hafley said he wants another look at players on the bubble, and the team will be hoping Moore's injury isn't as severe as it initially appeared.
