Malaysia’s health ministry has reported a surge in dengue fever cases in the capital and its surrounding region, warning of a high risk of transmission as the mosquito-borne illness spreads to other parts of the country.

The ministry said in a statement that the early increase in cases was mainly concentrated in the Klang Valley, particularly Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and the state of Selangor. Nationwide, there have been 58,079 cases since early August, a 56.2% increase compared with the same period in 2025, with 55 deaths attributed to dengue complications.

Regional breakdown

The most dramatic rise has been in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, where cases jumped 106% compared with the same period last year. Selangor recorded a 61% increase. The ministry also noted significant increases in the northern state of Perlis, up 207%, and the southern state of Johor, up 109%, as of August 15.

These figures highlight a broader national trend, with the ministry describing the overall situation as concerning given rising cases in several other states.

Response and causes

The health ministry said it has implemented intensive and targeted prevention and control measures, including early case detection, vector control and outbreak management. It said these measures had begun to show positive results, but the risk remained high.

The ministry attributed the increase to a combination of factors, saying in a statement: “The increase in dengue cases is influenced by various factors, including unpredictable weather conditions, namely rainfall combined with hot weather, which creates an environment conducive to the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes. The presence of many water-holding containers that are not maintained in residential areas and surroundings also contributed to the increased risk of Aedes mosquito breeding and the spread of dengue fever.”

About the disease

Dengue is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and causes symptoms such as severe fever, headaches, rashes and muscle and joint pain. Severe forms of the disease can lead to haemorrhagic fever. There is currently no vaccine available.

The ministry said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust its interventions based on epidemiological developments.
