Rain and thunderstorms forecast for Delhi-NCR on August 25

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms and lightning across Delhi-NCR on August 25, with the advisory covering New Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. According to the IMD's bulletin, Delhi is expected to remain generally cloudy, with very light to light rain likely at many places and moderate rain at isolated locations during the morning to noon period, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning activity. Another spell of very light to light rain is possible between afternoon and evening.

The forecast for August 25 indicates a maximum temperature of 34°C to 36°C and a minimum of 25°C to 27°C. The capital recorded moderate rain at many places with heavy rain at isolated locations on Monday, August 24. At Safdarjung, the maximum temperature was 32.3°C, while the minimum was 27.8°C, and the station recorded 34.6 mm of rain between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

Easing expected from August 26

According to a separate forecast carried by CNBC TV18, Delhi may see an easing of rainfall on Wednesday, August 26, after two days of intense showers. The national capital is likely to remain generally cloudy, with very light to light rain possible at a few places between morning and noon. Temperatures are expected to range between 25 and 34 degrees Celsius.

That forecast notes that the Delhi University observatory and Ayanagar each recorded 10 cm of rain, among the highest totals in the capital, and that winds gusted to 54 kmph in some areas. The relatively subdued forecast follows heavy rain across Delhi during the previous 24 hours.

For the period after August 26, The Economic Times reports that the IMD has forecast no rain for Delhi from August 26 to August 30, with mostly clear skies expected. Maximum temperatures could rise to 35°C to 37°C from August 26 onwards, according to that forecast.

Advisory measures

The Gurugram administration advised work from home on August 25 for schools and offices, as reported by The Economic Times. The advisory did not specify the reasons but came ahead of the forecast rain.

Heavy rain expected across other parts of India

Different parts of India are set to receive significant rainfall over the next few days. Mumbai and the wider Konkan region are likely to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on Wednesday, August 26, as reported by CNBC TV18. The IMD has not issued a heavy rain warning for Konkan and Goa, although continued showers could cause localised waterlogging and traffic disruption in vulnerable parts of the city.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places over East and West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, East and West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. According to the IMD's forecast, widespread rainfall is expected over both divisions of Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. Thunderstorms and lightning may affect Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

In the east, isolated heavy rain is likely over Bihar, Jharkhand and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. A low-pressure area over Jharkhand and its neighbourhood is expected to move west-northwestwards, sustaining rainfall over parts of central and eastern India, as reported by CNBC TV18.

Heavy showers are possible over Madhya Maharashtra and Kerala, while Coastal Karnataka is likely to see widespread rain. In Bengaluru, scattered rain is possible as rainfall activity weakens across South Interior Karnataka, which recorded heavy rain in the previous 24 hours; Bhagamandala in Kodagu recorded 15 cm of rain.

Weather warnings and advisories

Parts of Tamil Nadu. The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid rough seas along and off the Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts. Gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, with gusts of up to 60 kmph, are possible over parts of Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh, according to the meteorological department.

Residents and commuters in the affected regions have been advised to stay in and follow weather updates. The forecast for Delhi-NCR suggests that the wet spell may bring temporary relief from heat, but the rise in temperatures expected from August 26 could see another shift in conditions.
