Festival Celebrates Monsoon and Folk Traditions

The Delhi Government hosted the 'Badariya: A Monsoon Farewell Festival' at Talkatora Stadium on Monday, bringing together folk music, dance, and art traditions from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Purvanchal. The event was organised by the Department of Art, Culture & Language in collaboration with the Mata Chakery Devi Foundation and the Maithili-Bhojpuri Academy, as reported by The Tribune.

The festival drew inspiration from the place of the monsoon in India's literary and folk traditions, where the season has traditionally been associated with joy, love, longing, and creativity. Songs associated with sawan and bhado, along with traditional folk dances and musical performances, were presented during the programme, according to The Tribune.

The highlight of the evening was a performance by Padma Shri awardee and folk singer Malini Awasthi, who presented renditions of kajri, thumri, and other folk melodies. Other artistes also presented folk songs, dances, and instrumental performances reflecting the musical traditions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, as reported by both The Tribune and ANI.

Attendees and Official Remarks

The event was attended by Union Minister Harsh Malhotra and Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra, along with BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and other MPs and MLAs, as reported by The Tribune. The Tribune reported that Malhotra said Delhi's development was not limited to civic infrastructure but also involved strengthening its cultural identity. ANI reported that Malhotra said such cultural programmes help strengthen Delhi's identity, and that Mishra said the government is working to make the capital a major cultural hub and provide different communities a platform to showcase their traditions.

Soundscapes of India 2026 Announcement

In a related development, ANI reported that Soundscapes of India (SOI) 2026 is set to bring Indian musicians, international artists, and music industry professionals together in New Delhi, returning for its third edition from August 29 to 31. Organised by the Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture through Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, the three-day event will be held at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre.

According to a release cited by ANI, the festival will feature more than 25 bands and over 150 artists from across India. Participants from more than 20 countries and 15 Indian states are expected to be part of the event. Four international acts from Indonesia, Egypt, Nepal, and the UK will also perform. The programme will cover a wide range of music, including Indian classical, folk, and indigenous music, fusion, jazz, rock, hip-hop, electronic, contemporary, and experimental sounds. Along with performances, SOI 2026 will include artist pitching sessions, meetings with international festival programmers, workshops, mentoring sessions, and discussions, according to ANI.
