Arrests Follow Firing in Najafgarh
Delhi Police's crime branch has arrested four men in connection with two firing incidents in Delhi and Ludhiana, allegedly linked to the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu and Bambiha gang. The arrests came after an investigation into a shooting outside a residence in Deenpur, Najafgarh, on August 16, in which no one was injured.
According to Republic World, the Delhi Crime Branch arrested two alleged shooters identified as Harmanjit Singh (23) of Amritsar and Harshdeep Singh alias Billa (22) of Ludhiana. The two were apprehended near Bajeet Pur Crossing on the Bawana-Kanjhawala Road in Delhi. Police said they were allegedly operating on the directions of gangster Devender Singh alias Gopi Lahoria, who is reportedly based in Canada.
The Times of India reported that the crime branch also arrested two alleged arms suppliers linked to the same gang network: Waseem alias Hazi Waseem (40) and his associate Majid (25), who has over 50 criminal cases registered against him. Waseem was arrested Monday from Mayur Vihar flyover service road while allegedly heading towards Akshardham. According to Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) HGS Dhaliwal, Waseem opened fire at officers surrounding him but was overpowered and disarmed. Investigators recovered a semi-automatic pistol, live cartridges, and the car allegedly used for smuggling illegal arms.
The Shooters' Movements
Republic World reported that the two shooters had travelled to Delhi by bus on August 14 and stayed at a hotel near Dwarka Mor. They allegedly received photographs and instructions to eliminate a particular target. On August 15, they collected two firearms and 19 rounds of ammunition from East Delhi and were promised a substantial payment for the assignment.
On August 16, the accused reached the target area and spotted the person at an egg shop. They followed him towards his residence and entered the house, but refrained from firing after seeing women and children inside, then fled the spot. The accused allegedly received an initial payment of around ₹30,000.
Investigators said the two subsequently travelled to Ludhiana, where Harshdeep allegedly fired two rounds in the air near “Pizza from Mexico” on August 17. They returned to Delhi on August 18-19 on the alleged directions of Gopi Lahoria to complete the unfinished assignment but were arrested while proceeding towards Najafgarh.
The Arms Supply Chain
The Times of India reported that the investigative chain began unfolding on August 16 with the Chhawla firing. Police arrested the shooters—Harmanjit Singh and Harshdeep Singh—along with a third co-conspirator, Harpreet Singh, on August 19. Their interrogation led investigators to Waseem and Majid, who allegedly supplied the firearms used in the attack.
Waseem is accused of supplying the pistol used by Shahrukh Pathan during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Police said Waseem was working on the directions of Canada-based gangster Davinderpal Singh alias Gopi Lahoria and was supplying weapons to gang members. Waseem has a criminal record involving murder, attempted murder, and illegal arms trafficking, and was released from Rohini Jail in December last year. Majid was released from jail on April 24 this year.
The Times of India quoted DCP (crime) Sanjeev Yadav, whose team comprising inspector Sunder Gautam had been working on the leads since the Chhawla firing. Yadav said the firing was linked to an ongoing property dispute involving Kapil Sangwan’s gang.
Motive and Background
Republic World reported that preliminary investigation indicates the firing at Umed Singh's residence may be linked to a longstanding rivalry involving his brother, late Ballu Pehlwan, who was murdered in 2024. The murder was allegedly orchestrated by Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu.
Harshdeep Singh has previous cases related to murder, an NDPS offence, prison-related offences, and the Arms Act, and was released from Ludhiana Jail in June 2026. Harmanjit Singh has previous cases relating to theft and robbery and was released from jail in July 2026. The two accused are wanted in FIR No. 301/2026 at PS Chhawala, Delhi, relating to the Najafgarh firing, and FIR No. 227/2026 at PS Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, relating to the Punjab firing incident. The Crime Branch recovered two semi-automatic pistols and seven live cartridges from the accused.
Further investigation is underway.
