Murder Investigation Underway After Fatal Stabbing at Wembley Council Building
A murder investigation has been launched after a young man died following a stabbing at Brent Civic Centre in Wembley, north-west London, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. The building houses Brent Council's headquarters and a library.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon. Kent Online and the Evening Standard reported that emergency services were called at 2.25pm, while My London reported that the London Ambulance Service was called at 2:55pm. The victim, believed to be a teenage boy or a man in his early 20s, was found with stab wounds and treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials Respond with Shock and Condolences
Council Leader Muhammed Butt described the incident as "appalling and deeply tragic," saying the borough had been left "shaken." In a statement reported by My London, Butt expressed that the thoughts of the council were with the victim's family and loved ones, as well as the staff, residents, and visitors who witnessed the attack. He urged people to avoid the area and not to speculate or repeat unverified claims while the investigation is active.
Green Party councillors representing Wembley Park ward, Cllr Iman Ahmadi Moghaddam and Cllr Najib Warsame, issued a statement expressing their thoughts and sympathies for the victim's family. Brent Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr Anton Georgiou, said he was "disturbed and saddened" by the news, adding that his heart goes out to the victim and their loved ones.
Police Investigation and Community Reassurance
Superintendent Chris Clarke, lead for emergency response policing in the area, called the incident "awful" and said "someone has tragically lost their life." He said an investigation is underway to establish exactly what took place and trace those responsible. Police have stated that the incident is not believed to be a wider threat to the community nor terror-related.
The civic centre was evacuated and remains closed until further notice, along with Wembley Library. Police have imposed a Section 60 order, granting officers enhanced stop and search powers, covering the Wembley Park, Barnhill, Tokyngton, Stonebridge, Roundwood, Dollis Hill, Willesden, and Welsh Harp ward areas of Brent.
No arrests have been made, and police are urgently trying to identify the victim and inform next of kin. There will be an increased police presence in the area in the coming hours while officers continue their investigation.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said they sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, and an incident response officer, as well as dispatching London's Air Ambulance. Despite the efforts of crews, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene.
The council has advised people to stay away from the area as police continue their work.
