Mfuni's Rise and Watford Loan

Mfuni spent the second half of last season on loan at Watford, making eight Championship appearances, starting each match. He showed versatility between centre-back and left-back, but an injury prematurely ended his spell at Vicarage Road. Before the loan, he had made his senior Manchester City debut against Exeter in the FA Cup and was included in Enzo Maresca's squad for the club's pre-season tour. He also appeared on the bench for Manchester City in the Champions League on multiple occasions during the campaign, as reported by talkSPORT.

Dowling told BBC Three Counties Radio: "Everyone who watched Watford play last year in the games when Mfuni, especially, played, it wouldn't surprise me, with Man City losing Nathan Ake this year, if they kept him around." He added: "He's left-footed like Ake, he can play left-back, he can play left centre-half, so that wouldn't surprise me at all. However, the club are in contact with Man City regularly... so just wait and see." Dowling also noted the limitations of a loan arrangement, saying: "It's unfortunate with loans like that because we're never in control with them as they are not our players."

With the Mfuni deal off, Coventry have had to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements. According to talkSPORT, the newly-promoted side have reportedly agreed to sign Brentford's Ethan Pinnock in a transfer worth an initial £5 million, rising to £6 million. The 33-year-old Jamaica international has been with Brentford for seven years, making 216 appearances and scoring 12 goals. His contract is expiring next summer, and the Bees have opted to cash in on the defender, who has played just eight times under Keith Andrews.
