Swinney announces starting quarterback
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday that senior Christopher Vizzina will start at quarterback in Saturday's season opener at LSU, ending a quarterback competition that stretched back to spring practices. Swinney made the announcement during his Tuesday news conference, as reported by both com and the Charleston Post and Courier.
Vizzina, a senior from Birmingham, Alabama, and former Briarwood Christian star, beat out freshman Tait Reynolds for the starting nod. Swinney said Vizzina had "earned" the job during preseason practice.
"It's been a lot of fun," Swinney said, via the Greenville News. "They've had a very detailed process on how they've gone through it. Every practice, every rep, every throw, everything has been graded to the ninth degree, and (Vizzina) is just a little ahead. He's not a mile ahead, but he's ahead, and practice matters."
The decision comes with Clemson preparing for a marquee matchup against LSU. Kickoff is set for 6:30 m. Central at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, with the game airing live on ABC.
The competition
The battle between Vizzina and Reynolds dated back to spring practices, according to the Charleston Post and Courier. Swinney had long said Vizzina was in "pole position" for the job throughout the offseason, but he never fully committed to a starter until Tuesday.
Reynolds, a three-star recruit out of Arizona who missed his final high school season with a hamstring injury, impressed during fall camp. Swinney described Reynolds as a "clear" No. 2 and said there would be a competition in the fall. The two quarterbacks split reps and threw to receivers at the same time during fall camp.
The competition remained close into late August. Swinney said after Clemson's Aug. 15 scrimmage that the decision might have to wait until game day, and during the second scrimmage on Aug. 20, both quarterbacks played their full share of snaps.
Vizzina's path to the starting role
Vizzina, a former four-star prospect in Clemson's 2023 signing class, spent the past two seasons as the backup to Cade Klubnik, according to Yardbarker. Klubnik left for the NFL draft after the 2025 season and is now a member of the New York Jets, opening the door for Vizzina to take over.
Vizzina's first extensive action came last season when he substituted for an injured Klubnik. He started Clemson's 35-24 loss to SMU on Oct. 18, 2025, passing for 317 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. In 14 career games, he has completed 64 of 105 passes for 596 yards with four touchdowns and an interception, while also adding a rushing touchdown.
Before college, Vizzina led Briarwood to a 10-2 record in his junior year and played in both the All-American Bowl and the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic following his senior season.
Looking ahead
While Vizzina was named the starter for the LSU game, Swinney's specific wording that Vizzina would start "this week" suggests the quarterback competition may not be fully resolved. Yardbarker noted that Week 2 against Georgia Southern could feature both Vizzina and Reynolds ahead of Clemson's ACC opener against North Carolina in Week 3.
Vizzina acknowledged the pressure of the moment, especially with a road game against LSU to open the season.
"Everybody's gonna look is looking at me, seeing how I'm gonna respond," Vizzina said during his first press conference of the fall on Aug. 18. "I feel like my whole life, this is what I'm built for, this opportunity."
He also emphasized his focus on performance, telling the Greenville News: "There's a lot of people that dream to be a quarterback here and it's been my dream. It's a game of performance, my coaches can prepare me, my teammates can as well, but when we get out on the field, I have to perform."
