China's Tianwen-2 space probe has reached its target, the near-Earth asteroid Kamo'oalewa, after a journey of about 400 days, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced on Monday. The mission, launched in May 2025, marks China's first attempt to collect samples from an asteroid and represents a milestone in the country's efforts to advance its deep-space exploration capabilities.

The spacecraft has arrived at a distance of 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the asteroid, also designated 2016 HO3, which measures just a few dozen meters in diameter. The CNSA said the probe will now conduct increasingly detailed scientific exploration to acquire data on the asteroid's morphology, material composition, and internal structure, laying the groundwork for subsequent sample collection operations.

It was previously estimated to measure about 40 to 100 meters in diameter, but the image captured by Tianwen-2, along with its scale bar, suggests the asteroid is likely to be less than 40 meters across. This makes it far smaller than Ryugu and Bennu, the targets previously explored by Japan and the United States, which are about 900 meters and 500 meters across, respectively.

Zhang Pengfei, a researcher from the Institute of Geochemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the South China Morning Post: "Based on the image released so far, this asteroid appears to be somewhat smaller than previously predicted — it seems to be only about 20 to 30 metres across, whereas the earlier estimate from our paper was around 57 metres."
