Final Moved to Chennai for Fan Access

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to host the Duleep Trophy final at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 6 to 10, moving the summit clash from its initial venue at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, explaining that the move aims to allow spectators to watch the country's top domestic cricketers in person.

"We wanted to allow people to come and watch the Duleep Trophy final, hence the BCCI has decided to conduct the important domestic fixture at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai," Saikia said in an interaction with The Times of India. He added that the CoE has restrictions regarding crowd attendance, making it unsuitable for the final.

Saikia elaborated on the venue change during a conversation with IANS: "I will not say we are shifting the final venue. But we are hosting the final match of the Duleep Trophy at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Other matches will be in the BCCI CoE Grounds in Bengaluru. In Bengaluru, there is no crowd, which is due to some government restrictions - that we cannot allow crowds in that complex."

Tournament Structure and Schedule

The Duleep Trophy, described by multiple outlets as the traditional curtain-raiser for the Indian domestic season, will begin on August 23 with two quarterfinals at the CoE grounds in Bengaluru. East Zone will face North East Zone, while North Zone takes on West Zone. The winners will progress to the semifinals scheduled for August 30 to September 2, with Central Zone facing the winner of the East/North East match and South Zone taking on the winner of the North/West encounter.

Defending champions Central Zone and last year's runners-up South Zone received direct byes into the semifinals. The tournament features six zonal teams—Central, East, North, North East, South, and West—competing in a knockout format, as outlined by Cricket Addictor.

Reason for the Venue Shift

The decision to relocate the final stems from restrictions at the CoE campus. Saikia had previously explained, "There are some government restrictions on how we use this land, and because of that, we cannot have crowds in this campus." Last year, the Duleep Trophy was held entirely behind closed doors at the CoE, which The Hindu noted was "much to the disappointment of the fans."

While Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was also considered as a potential venue, the board ultimately chose the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Saikia emphasized the tournament's significance, stating, "The Duleep Trophy is an important first-class tournament in our calendar and carries a rich legacy. The quality of cricket is always high, and we want fans to have the opportunity to watch the final live at the stadium."

In addition to the venue change, the BCCI has expanded broadcast coverage. Saikia said, "We have also increased coverage of the tournament and all matches of the Duleep Trophy will be streamed live, and there will also be TV coverage of one quarter-final, one semi-final and the final."

Spotlight on Young Talent

The tournament will feature several notable players, with particular attention on 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The Bihar-born batter has already made his international T20 debut and impressed in the IPL, but questions remain about his red-ball credentials. He averages 17.25 across eight first-class matches, as reported by The New Indian Express and The Times of India. Sooryavanshi will serve as deputy to Ishan Kishan in the East Zone squad, which also includes Abhimanyu Easwaran.

The Indian Express detailed Sooryavanshi's rapid rise, noting that in 2024, the junior selection panel headed by Tilak Naidu short-listed him for a camp for the 2026 Under-19 World Cup despite being only 13. VVS Laxman approved his inclusion, and by September of that year, Sooryavanshi had scored a century in a Youth Test against Australia in Chennai.

Other players to watch include R Smaran (South Zone), Sanat Sangwan (North Zone), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (West Zone), according to The New Indian Express. Sarfaraz Khan (West Zone) is expected to join the tournament after the Sri Lanka Test series.

The tournament's role as a pathway to the national team is underscored by the presence of Saransh Jain and Auqib Nabi, who excelled in last year's Duleep Trophy and have since been selected for India's squad for the Sri Lanka series. The Times of India noted that selectors value consistent domestic performers, offering inspiration to those participating this season.

With the final now set for Chennai, fans will have the opportunity to witness the culmination of India's premier domestic red-ball competition in person, a change that aligns with the BCCI's stated commitment to increasing accessibility and coverage of the tournament.
