Chelsea explore midfield options as Enzo Fernandez's future hangs in the balance
Chelsea have reportedly made contact with the camp of Roma midfielder Manu Kone as they weigh up a late move for the France international. The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the Blues' top options as they prepare for the possibility that Enzo Fernandez could leave before the transfer deadline.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have spoken to Kone's agents, though talks are not advanced at this stage. Roma are said to be keen on keeping the midfielder and have yet to receive an official bid, according to reports from the Italian media.
Kone has been a regular at Roma since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2024. He made 29 Serie A appearances last season, starting 28 of them, scoring twice and providing three assists in 2,456 league minutes. On the international stage, Kone made his senior debut for France against Italy in September 2024 and has since earned 18 caps. He was part of France's squad at this summer's World Cup, starting four matches during their campaign.
Fernandez's departure edges closer
The interest in Kone comes as Fernandez's future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain. The Argentine has been left out of Chelsea's squad in both of their last two matches: the victories over Luton Town on Thursday and Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
Manchester City have long-standing interest in Fernandez and are expected to push to complete a deal before the window closes. According to reports, Fernandez has already reached a verbal agreement with the Premier League champions, though Chelsea and Manchester City have yet to reach a club-to-club agreement. Chelsea are said to want more than £120 million for the Argentine, who they were willing to sell as long as they feel they finish the window in a stronger position.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso addressed Fernandez's absence from the squad, explaining: "We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game."
The Blues have already completed 11 new signings this summer, but their spending could continue if Fernandez completes his proposed move to Manchester City before the deadline. Alongside their search for another midfielder, Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Everton attacking midfielder Iliman Ndiaye, although Tottenham are among the clubs also interested in the Senegal international.
Chelsea cool interest in Camara
Kone is not the only name on Chelsea's list. Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara was also among their top targets, but Chelsea's interest has cooled after talks failed to progress. According to Onze Mondial, the Blues held discussions with Monaco late last week but have not pushed on with a deal. L'Equipe added that Chelsea have another "priority" midfield target.
Camara, 22, has made 75 appearances for Monaco since joining from Metz in 2024, scoring six goals. He has started all four of Monaco's league games this season and already has a goal to his name.
Kone's potential fit at Chelsea
Should Chelsea pursue Kone, they would be acquiring a midfielder who has proven his consistency at both club and international level. His experience in Serie A and with France at the World Cup could make him a valuable addition, though Roma's reluctance to lose him could complicate any deal.
Chelsea have overseen 13 departures either on loan or permanently this window, with further exits possible in the final stages. Tottenham are reportedly working on a deal to sign Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, with the centre-back's departure now a realistic possibility.
As the transfer deadline approaches, Chelsea's midfield plans remain fluid, with Kone emerging as a key target alongside other potential reinforcements.
