Chelsea Deadline Day: Midfield Uncertainty Surrounds Enzo Fernandez, Replacement Targets Emerge
Chelsea are expected to be among the busiest Premier League clubs on transfer deadline day, with midfield business likely to dominate the final hours of their summer window. At the centre of the activity is Manchester City’s long-standing interest in Enzo Fernandez, which remains central to Chelsea’s planning.
According to The Standard, Fernandez has sealed his move from Stamford Bridge, with Manchester City signing him in a £125 million deal. That leaves Chelsea with just five senior midfielders, according to the same report. The Blues are not actively pushing the Argentina international out, but they are prepared to consider a sale if the financial package is strong enough and they believe the squad will emerge from the window in a better overall position.
Chelsea have spent much of the closing stages of the window monitoring potential midfield additions because of the uncertainty surrounding Fernandez. Man City have maintained their interest despite Chelsea previously setting an earlier deadline for offers. The Guardian reports that Man City remain involved in talks for Fernandez, while Chelsea continue exploring midfield reinforcements as they decide whether a late sale can realistically be completed.
Chelsea’s approach, led by Xabi Alonso and the recruitment team, is not focused on finding a direct carbon copy of Fernandez. Instead, they are examining the wider balance of the squad, which has led them to consider players with different profiles. Two names on the shortlist are Roma’s Manu Kone and Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara. Kone would bring more athleticism and ball-carrying ability, while Camara offers energy, defensive coverage and room for development.
However, the option of signing Kone appears to have been taken off the table. Reports in Italy claim Roma’s executives have drawn a line in the sand and will refuse to sell the Frenchman under any circumstances. Kone started as Roma dispatched Lecce 4-0 on Monday night, and speaking at full-time, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made clear he had no intention of letting Kone depart. Asked to respond to the rumours, Gasperini said: “Absolutely not, it is a media thing, I know nothing about it. I know the owners too do not want to sell. I don't know who approached us, but we have not received any formal offers for him.”
Chelsea also hold a long-standing interest in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, though the Cherries have made clear they are not interested in selling this summer.
Timing remains a critical factor. Any replacement must be completed before Chelsea give final approval to Fernandez’s departure. While City may be willing to pay heavily, Chelsea cannot allow the size of the fee to become the only consideration. Selling Fernandez for a huge fee could provide significant financial flexibility, but doing so without an adequate replacement would weaken Alonso’s side at a critical moment. The final hours of the window will require discipline and a clear tactical plan if Chelsea are to strengthen their squad rather than simply cash in on a star player.
