CBFC certifies Mirzapur The Movie with A rating, trims intimate scenes and alters dialogue
Mirzapur The Movie, the big-screen adaptation of the popular streaming franchise, has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ahead of its theatrical release on September 4. The film, directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, has a runtime of 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 19 seconds, as reported by India Today and Mashable.
The certification process involved a series of modifications, including changes to abusive language and intimate scenes. According to certification details shared by Bollywood Hungama and reported by India Today, cuss words were muted at four places, while abusive words were replaced at six others. The board also directed changes to certain dialogues, including "Galey se lag gar". In one instance in the first half, a word was replaced with "kamar", while in the second half, "lanth" was altered. A caste-related reference was also asked to be changed.
The CBFC further directed the makers to reduce the impact of intimate scenes by 50 per cent through modifications to both visuals and sound. The changes were made to two sequences—one before the interval and another after it. Around 35 seconds of intimate content was removed, as per the certification details. Mashable also reported that the board directed cuts of approximately 35 seconds from two intimate sequences, reducing their duration and impact rather than removing them entirely.
Notably, the board did not seek cuts to the film's violent or gory portions, according to both India Today and Mashable. This decision aligns with the franchise's gritty atmosphere, which the film retains as it brings the characters and world of Mirzapur from streaming to cinemas.
The film was cleared by the CBFC's Revising Committee, as reported by India Today. Typically, a film is first examined by the Examining Committee; if filmmakers disagree with suggested modifications or if substantial changes are recommended, they can approach the Revising Committee for a fresh review.
However, a source close to the film told India Today that the theatrical version was cleared with "hardly any modifications" and maintained that there were no cuts. The source said audiences will see the film "exactly the way the makers intended", addressing reports of approximately 35 seconds of footage being removed.
The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment. It stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, and others, reprising their roles from the series. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 4, 2026.
