Fever roll past Sky, securing 113-90 victory

Caitlin Clark scored 37 points and Kelsey Mitchell added 30 as the Indiana Fever pulled away from the Chicago Sky for a 113-90 victory on Sunday at Wintrust Arena. Clark made a career-high eight of Indiana's franchise-record 18 3-pointers and also had 10 assists, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Fever closed out a 3-2 road trip with their third game in four nights. They had dropped two in a row before Sunday's win, which improved their record to 25-16.

Sky eliminated from playoff race

The loss, combined with a Washington Mystics win on Sunday night, eliminated the Sky from playoff contention. Natasha Cloud had 16 points and seven assists, and Azurá Stevens added 14 points and eight rebounds for Chicago, which had won three straight before the defeat.

The Fever played without center Aliyah Boston, sidelined by a right leg injury. Boston had 22 points and six assists in Saturday's 109-102 loss at the New York Liberty.

Rematch marked by earlier incident

Sunday's game was the first meeting between the teams since the Sky's DiJonai Carrington took down Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on a hard foul during a fast break earlier this month. Carrington was listed as questionable with a left foot injury but was cleared after warmups.

Both players downplayed the lingering tension ahead of the game. "My mindset has never changed. I think it is what it is," Cunningham said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "I'm locked in on tonight. … I think we're just out here trying to get the win." Sky coach Tyler Marsh said he didn't have any conversations with his players about the charged atmosphere from their previous matchup, adding, "That kind of was what it was last game and anything that came out of it kind of" — a statement left incomplete in the report.

Cunningham and Carrington both checked in for the first time with 3:04 left in the first quarter. There were no major issues in the first half. Cunningham had three points in six minutes at the break, and Carrington had four points on 2-for-7 shooting in more than 11 minutes.

Third-quarter run and notable incidents

The Fever used a 13-2 run in the third quarter to pull away. Lexie Hull scored 14 points, and Makayla Timpson added 12 for Indiana.

A separate incident occurred in the third quarter when Natasha Cloud yelled and pointed at Enes Kanter Freedom before being separated from him, according to the Chicago Tribune. Kanter Freedom, who wore a shirt reading "WOMAN noun. adult human female," was ejected from the venue after the confrontation. Kanter Freedom and Royce White had declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft this month, saying they identify as women.

Looking ahead

The Fever will host the Connecticut Sun on Friday night, while the Sky will visit the Sun on Tuesday night.
