ASEAN celebrates 59th anniversary with calls for unity and cooperation
Diplomatic missions across the region marked the 59th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with ceremonies and joint statements, reaffirming the bloc's commitment to peace, prosperity, and regional cooperation.
The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI), comprising the diplomatic missions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam, issued a joint statement on the occasion of ASEAN Day, according to reporting by the Associated Press of Pakistan and The Diplomatic Insight.
In the statement, the committee reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace, prosperity, resilience and inclusivity, and highlighted the importance of stronger engagement and cooperation with Pakistan, as reported by both outlets. The ACI said dialogue, consultation, consensus and mutual trust remained central to addressing regional differences and promoting shared interests, with both sources emphasizing the committee's view that ASEAN continues to develop as a rules-based, people-centred and future-oriented community guided by the ASEAN Charter, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-interference, mutual respect and adherence to international law.
Milestones and new member
The joint statement noted that 2026 marks the first year of implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, the bloc's long-term roadmap for a more resilient, innovative, integrated and people-centred community, as reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan and The Diplomatic Insight. The year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
Both outlets reported that the ACI welcomed Timor-Leste as ASEAN's 11th member state, with The Diplomatic Insight describing it as a historic development that would strengthen the organization's community-building efforts and promote a more inclusive Southeast Asia.
Philippines chairs 2026 with theme 'Navigating Our Future, Together'
Under the Philippines' Chairmanship in 2026, ASEAN is pursuing the theme 'Navigating Our Future, Together', with priorities centred on peace and security, people empowerment and prosperity corridors, according to both the Associated Press of Pakistan and The Diplomatic Insight. The ACI said these priorities sought to strengthen regional stability through dialogue, empower communities through inclusion and innovation, and promote economic integration, connectivity, digital transformation and sustainable development, as reported by The Diplomatic Insight.
Pakistan's growing role with ASEAN
Both outlets reported that the ACI highlighted relations with Pakistan', recalling that Islamabad was granted Sectoral Dialogue Partnership status with ASEAN in 1993 and acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia in 2004. The committee also noted Pakistan's participation in the ASEAN Regional Forum, with The Diplomatic Insight adding that growing bilateral cooperation offered opportunities to expand mutual understanding and practical cooperation.
The ACI called for continued expansion of Pakistan-ASEAN engagement in areas such as trade and investment, connectivity, digital transformation, education, climate resilience, tourism, human resource development, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges, as reported by both outlets. Brunei Embassy marks anniversary in Amman
In a separate commemoration, the Embassy of Brunei in Amman hosted a flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday, 18 August, to mark the anniversary, as reported by Fana News, citing a Petra news dispatch. The event was led by Bruneian Ambassador Nor Huda Ahmad, alongside diplomats and ambassadors from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Ambassador Ahmad pointed to growing opportunities for ASEAN and Jordan to boost trade, investment, education, and tourism ties, according to Fana News. The ceremony honored nearly six decades of regional unity and international cooperation, the report said.
