BRICS Energy Ministers Adopt Communique to Strengthen Energy Security Cooperation
BRICS energy ministers have agreed to intensify cooperation across energy security, sustainable development, innovation, and resilient energy infrastructure, according to a joint communique adopted at a meeting in Gurugram, India, as reported by TASS.
India's Energy Ministry, which hosted the meeting as part of the country's BRICS chairmanship, stated that ministers reaffirmed the importance of respecting national circumstances, development priorities, and each country's right to independently determine its own energy sector development path. The communique also emphasizes that energy security remains a cornerstone of BRICS cooperation and highlights the need to create diversified, resilient, and transparent energy systems and supply chains, according to the same source.
Russia's Role and Priorities
Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov, addressing the meeting via video link, outlined Moscow's ambitions within the grouping. He said Russia intends to not only increase energy resource supplies but also expand exports of its technologies and production solutions to BRICS countries.
"Long-term priorities of Russian fuel and energy sector are set in the 2050 Energy Strategy and Russia is going to not merely scale up resource supplies but also to expand exports of own technologies and production solutions," Tsivilyov said, as cited by TASS.
The minister also stated that Russia views the BRICS energy platform as a priority mechanism of cooperation and supports hydrogen value chain research initiated by India. He stressed that, given geopolitical instability, it is "extremely important" to consolidate efforts to ensure common access to inexpensive, reliable, and sustainable energy sources.
Outlook
Participants at the meeting expressed readiness to continue cooperation next year, when China assumes the BRICS chairmanship, according to the Indian Energy Ministry's statement.
