Recovery of Bodies

Police in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district recovered the bodies of two missing youths on Saturday from a forest area within Kandra police station limits. The bodies, identified as Rahul Hansda and Tapan Pradhan, were found buried near the Rapcha football ground and were dug out in the presence of a magistrate, according to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Seraikela) Anubhav Bhardwaj. The Times of India later identified the victims as Rahul Hansda (23) and Tapan Pradhan (21), residents of Dhatkidih, Kandra.

Missing Persons Case

The two youths had been missing for several days before their bodies were found. Reports vary on the date they disappeared: one source suggests they went missing on August 17, while another indicates they were missing since August 13. Their families lodged missing complaints at the Kandra police station on August 20, expressing fears that the two had been abducted and killed.

The families' concerns were confirmed when police, following leads, recovered the bodies and initiated an investigation.

Investigation and Suspects

The investigation moved quickly. ThePrint reported that police detained two suspects, Ravindra Mardi and Phulchand Hansda, for questioning on Friday, and their interrogation led to a search operation in the forest area that recovered the bodies on Saturday. The Times of India likewise noted that police detained local youths and used interrogation clues to find the bodies.

The police officer-in-charge of Kandra police station, Vinod Kumar Murmu, told ThePrint that preliminary investigation suggests the incident was linked to a dispute over the theft of a mobile phone. "The duo had collapsed after they were badly thrashed," Murmu said, indicating that the victims had been physically beaten severely. He added that the accused allegedly buried the bodies to conceal evidence, fearing arrest.

The exact motive, however, remains unconfirmed. The Times of India reported that investigators suspect the killings may have been linked to a mobile phone theft dispute, but noted that motive is unconfirmed.

The bodies have been sent to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police also collected evidence from the site where bodies were found.
