Carlton overpowers Adelaide in dominant display

Carlton has begun its 2026 AFLW campaign in emphatic fashion, consigning Adelaide to a 0-2 start with a 27-point victory at Ikon Park. The Blues led for the entire match, recording a 8 (50) to 5 (23) win in front of a crowd of 2012.

The result builds on Carlton’s return to the finals in 2025 — their first since 2020 — and signals that the side has avoided the typical post-season comedown. Instead of stagnating, the Blues have adapted their game style further, embracing a faster, handball-heavy approach that has caught opponents off guard.

Morris-Dalton seizes second chance

Forward Nell Morris-Dalton was the standout, booting three goals to show Carlton selectors they made the right call in giving her a lifeline. Morris-Dalton was delisted by Collingwood at the end of last season and initially missed the cut for Carlton’s top-flight team, but was brought in as an injury replacement for midfielder Maddy Guerin, who ruptured her ACL.

Morris-Dalton finished with 18 disposals and was ably supported by midfielders Erone Fitzpatrick (30 disposals) and Dayna Finn (28 disposals). The trio were instrumental in extending Carlton’s seven-year winning streak against the Crows. Claudia Whitford opened the scoring with a long-range goal from 45 metres, and Darcy Vescio added a crucial major early in the final quarter to seal the win.

Adelaide’s transition struggles continue

Adelaide, now winless after two rounds, showed signs of improvement in the third quarter, closing the deficit to 13 points at the final break. However, costly turnovers and risky corridor play in the first half proved their undoing. Coach Ryan Davis acknowledged his side’s issues, noting they were plus-12 inside forward 50s but failed to make them count.

“Their ability to spread from contest, and ours inability to snap and seal and force them into more of a long down the line game was probably where they got us,” Davis said.

Despite the loss, Adelaide had strong individual performers in Ebony Marinoff (30 disposals, four clearances) and Madison Newman (30 disposals, one goal).

Hawks storm home at Alberton

In the day’s other match, Hawthorn pulled off a remarkable comeback at Alberton Oval, defeating Port Adelaide 5 (65) to 3 (33). Trailing by 19 points late in the second quarter, the Hawks kicked six of the next seven goals to complete the turnaround. Laura Stone and Aine McDonagh were influential, with Poppy Stockwell and McDonagh each finishing with three majors. Lucy Wales contributed 23 disposals, 19 hitouts and a goal, while Port Adelaide’s Maria Moloney (20 disposals, 14 tackles) and Matilda Scholz (24 disposals, 35 hitouts) fought hard in defeat.
