BlackRock's Record Inflows
BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, significantly increased its cryptocurrency exposure last week, acquiring more than 8 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to data from the five trading sessions ending August 21, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) recorded combined net inflows of 87 billion.
Finbold reports that IBIT attracted approximately 33 billion during this period, with daily inflows ranging from 2 million on August 17 to a peak of $503 million on August 20. ETHA added 8 million, with its largest daily inflow of 3 million also occurring on August 20.
These inflows made BlackRock a key driver of the week's rally, accounting for nearly 70% of the week's Bitcoin ETF inflows and more than 75% of Ethereum ETF inflows, according to Finbold.
A Breakout Week for Crypto ETFs
The broader S. spot crypto ETF market experienced its strongest week since October 2025. Finbold reports that spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately 9 billion in net inflows, while spot Ethereum ETFs added nearly $700 million, bringing combined inflows to about 6 billion. Trading volume across the funds more than tripled to roughly $29 billion.
The Motley Fool puts the Bitcoin ETF figure at 92 billion, also describing it as the group's best week of inflows since October 2025. The slight discrepancy between the two figures may reflect different measurement periods or data sources.
Drivers of the Rally
Several factors contributed to the surge in institutional interest. Finbold attributes the inflows partly to the S. Treasury's expansion of long-dated bond buybacks, which weakened the dollar and boosted demand for alternative assets. Bitcoin climbed above $77,000 following this development.
Renewed momentum for S. crypto regulation, including discussions surrounding the proposed CLARITY Act, also improved investor sentiment, according to Finbold. Additionally, a sharp market rally triggered significant short covering, attracting fresh institutional capital.
The Motley Fool points to broader macroeconomic concerns, noting that Bitcoin is showing correlation with gold amid concerns about S. dollar debasement.
Continued Accumulation
BlackRock's buying continued beyond the five-day window. com reports that the asset manager purchased 76 million worth of Bitcoin on August 27, according to Whale Insider data. This came as spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded 12 million in net inflows on the same day.
Bitcoin traded at approximately $79,502 at the time of reporting, up 24% over 24 hours, having earlier broken through the $80,000 resistance level. com describes this as a technical milestone reflecting sustained demand from large-scale investors rather than speculative retail momentum alone.
com also notes that BlackRock's renewed buying marks a shift from its behavior during earlier periods of heightened volatility, when the firm had reduced its Bitcoin exposure. The report describes the current pattern as consistent accumulation.
Bitcoin's Price Milestones
Bitcoin's recent performance has been notable, though it remains below its all-time high. As of midday Wednesday, August 26, Bitcoin traded around $78,500, according to The Motley Fool. To reach its all-time high, the cryptocurrency would need to gain approximately 5%.
Despite this gap, the ETF inflows are seen as a positive signal. The Motley Fool notes that IBIT is the largest fund in the spot Bitcoin ETF category, and that BlackRock has processed $5 billion in Bitcoin "swaps," in which market participants move their Bitcoin into the ETF. The pace of these swaps has led authorized participants to lower the dollar amount required to execute Bitcoin-to-Bitcoin ETF transactions from $100 million to $50 million, and now to just $3 million.
Outlook
Analysts remain bullish on Bitcoin's trajectory. The Motley Fool cites Bernstein's forecast that Bitcoin will reach $300,000 in three years.
Market observers interpret the current inflow pattern as evidence of market maturation. According to com, Bitcoin's ability to hold near the $80,000 level despite profit-taking suggests conviction among accredited investors and registered funds remains intact, even as the rapid ascent shows signs of moderating.
