BJP to Assess Ground Pulse in Punjab Ahead of Next Year's Elections; BL Santosh Tasked To Tour Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala

Introduction

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh arrived in Punjab on Monday for a two-day visit aimed at reviewing the party's organisational preparedness and strengthening grassroots coordination ahead of the next assembly elections. Santosh, who holds a key position in the BJP's hierarchy as the topmost link between the party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), will hold a series of zonal meetings across the state's five organisational divisions.

The Tour and Its Purpose

According to a party statement, Santosh will chair meetings in Patiala, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar over the two days. The meetings are designed to bring together party representatives from across the state's constituencies. The Patiala meeting, for instance, will include leaders from Mohali, Patiala North, Patiala Urban, Patiala South, Fatehgarh Sahib and Sangrur, while the Bathinda meeting will cover Barnala, Mansa, Bathinda Rural, Bathinda Urban, Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka and Faridkot.

On Tuesday, the focus shifts to Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. The Ludhiana zonal meeting will cover Ludhiana Rural, Ludhiana Urban, Moga, Jagraon, Khanna, Malerkotla and Ropar. The Jalandhar meeting will include Jalandhar North, Jalandhar Urban, Jalandhar South, Hoshiarpur Urban, Hoshiarpur Rural, Nawashahar and Kapurthala. The Amritsar meeting, which will be the final zonal gathering, will cover Amritsar Urban, Amritsar Rural I and II, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Batala, Pathankot and Ferozepur. A separate meeting with the state's general secretaries is also scheduled in Amritsar.

The BJP has said the tour is intended to review the party's organisational functioning across the state and to strengthen coordination and preparedness for the elections.

Organisational Context

Santosh's visit comes amid a broader organisational overhaul within the BJP, in which he was retained in his position. He is being accompanied by Saudan Singh, the BJP's national joint general secretary, who is responsible for RSS-BJP coordination in the northern states.

Alliance Speculation

While the party has not officially commented on the possibility of an electoral alliance in Punjab, sources within the party have indicated that a tie-up with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is close to being finalised, with the main sticking point being seat-sharing arrangements. SAD has reportedly sought five to ten additional seats in a potential agreement.

Looking Ahead

The tour is being seen as an opportunity for the party to identify potential candidates and to prioritise strengthening seats where it has previously been successful. The BJP, which has not yet won a majority in the state on its own, is expected to strategise on how to build on its existing support base.

Following Santosh's visit, a round of senior leaders is expected to be given charge of the state as the party intensifies its election preparations.
