BJP calls for multi-government intervention at Sabarimala

At a state-level convention of Ayyappa Guruswamis held at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada on Sunday, August 23, 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Andhra Pradesh unit called for coordinated intervention by the Centre and the state governments of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh to protect the traditions of the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple and ease difficulties faced by pilgrims during the annual season. The call came from BJP state president P.V.N. Madhav, who also received a memorandum from Ayyappa devotees during the meeting.

According to The Hindu, Madhav said preparations should begin immediately rather than waiting for the pilgrimage season. An action plan would be prepared for the forthcoming season, expected to run from November 15 to January 20, 2027. The New Indian Express reported that Guruswamis from across Andhra Pradesh raised several problems pilgrims face, including inadequate medical assistance and lack of basic facilities.

Pilgrim Amenities: Calls for TTD-style mechanism

To address these challenges, Madhav demanded the establishment of an effective institutional mechanism at Sabarimala on the lines of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). The proposed system, he said, would ensure better shrine management and comprehensive facilities for devotees, including accommodation, drinking water, annadanam, medical care, and transportation. Specifically, he called for information and medical centres in the Pamba-Nilakkal-Sannidhanam corridor, according to The New Indian Express.

The Kerala government, Madhav argued, should allocate land for the construction of shelters and facilitate organisations and individuals willing to provide annadanam and other services. He also said he would approach the Centre to run additional trains and special services from the Telugu-speaking states to Sabarimala during the Ayyappa season, and urged the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure adequate bus services, prevent excessive fare increases, and consider concessions for pilgrims.

Concerns Over Traditions and Assets

Madhav asserted that attempts were being made to exploit the temple's assets, including its gold, and that the sanctity and unique traditions of Sabarimala must be protected, as per The New Indian Express. He alleged a conspiracy against Hinduism and the temple's traditions, calling on Hindus to unite and fight for protection. While The Hindu's lead did not carry the conspiracy allegation, it expressed concern over what Madhav described as attempts to interfere with the shrine's established customs. Both outlets did report that Madhav urged Hindus to remain united.

At the Vijayawada meeting, Guruswamis from across the state highlighted issues related to medical assistance, accommodation, water, food, and transport. Madhav said their representations would be taken up with the Kerala and Andhra Pradesh governments and the Centre.

Plan for Legal Proceedings and Implementation

Madhav asked the Andhra Pradesh coalition government to join legal proceedings being pursued by the Centre on Sabarimala-related issues, according to The New Indian Express. The question of coordination was also underscored by The Hindu, which reported Madhav’s assertion that the party would collect representations from the Guruswamis and coordinate with the governments concerned.

Under Supervision of NTR over district president Adduri Sriram, the conference was attended by BJP leaders, Guruswamis, and representatives of religious organisations, The Hindu noted. Madhav asserted that efforts would be made to find permanent solutions to the major problems faced by devotees within the coming year.
