Comedian Bill Maher has ignited a fresh debate over religion's role in American politics, telling viewers of his HBO show that a candidate's public faith is welcome in the Democratic Party “as long as that faith isn’t Jewish.” The remark, made Friday during a segment on “Real Time,” came after CNN anchor Dana Bash discussed Texas Democrat James Talarico’s outspoken Christianity.

Bash suggested that Talarico's faith, which she said he "wears... on his sleeve," could be a political asset.

“Well, in the Democratic Party, as long as that faith isn’t Jewish, you’re good,” Maher retorted. When Bash replied, “Well, you said it,” Maher shot back, “Yeah, I said it because it’s true!”

Polls Show Partisan Divide on Israel Views

Maher's comments come amid polling that shows a marked partisan split in attitudes toward Israel. According to Pew Research Center data cited by Fox News and the New York Post, 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents hold an unfavorable view of Israel, a significant jump from 53% in 2022. In contrast, 58% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents hold a positive view of the Jewish state, while 41% view it negatively.

The political landscape has been further shaped by a new generation of Democratic candidates and influencers with outspokenly critical views of Israel. The New York Post, for example, highlighted Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker as examples of this trend.

Republican Jewish Coalition Weighs In

Sam Markstein, national political director and spokesman for the Republican Jewish Coalition, agreed with Maher's assessment. In a statement reported by Fox News Digital and the New York Post, Markstein said, “there is only one party where American Jews can be proudly Jewish and loudly pro-Israel, and it’s the Republican Party.”

Markstein added, “Democrats prove it again and again — from Kamala Harris passing over Josh Shapiro in 2024 to the rise of communist elected officials who traffic in antisemitism in halls of power across the country.” He concluded, “The Democratic Party is being remade by its radicalized base, and party leadership continues to fecklessly whistle past the political graveyard as American Jews flee.” The Republican Jewish Coalition has been a prominent voice on these issues.
