Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has categorically denied reports circulating on social media that his engagement had been finalised, saying neither he got engaged nor had any decision been taken regarding his marriage.
In a video statement on X, amid growing speculation on social media, the PPP chairman said reports about his engagement and marriage had been circulating without any basis and clarified that no such development had taken place. “I want to make it clear that neither has the match been finalised nor have I got engaged,” Bilawal said.
He also dismissed reports linking him to a prospective bride identified on social media as “Princess Gloria,” saying he had no knowledge of the person being discussed in connection with the rumours. “First of all, social media has already finalised my marriage talks, engagement and wedding,” Bilawal said, adding he wanted to make it clear that none of these developments had taken place.
The PPP chairman said speculation surrounding his personal life was being amplified on social media at a time when the country was confronted with more serious political, economic and public-interest issues. “In reality, these social media spectacles are hyped up to divert the public’s attention from actual issues,” he said. Bilawal said that any decision concerning his engagement or marriage would be communicated officially by his family rather than through social media speculation or unverified reports.
“If any such personal decision regarding my life is made, the announcement will come directly from my family,” he said, urging people to disregard the speculation until any formal announcement was made. “Until then, please focus on the real issues and ignore these social media spectacles,” he added.
The clarification came amid reports that President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal were in Vienna and were possibly holding discussions with the family of a prospective bride.
The Pakistan Peoples Party has also dismissed the reports of Bilawal Bhutto's marriage to 26-year-old former Austrian Archduchess Gloria von Habsburg as grapevine. Karachi Mayor and PPP leader Murtaza Wahab said the reports of Bilawal Bhutto's engagement and wedding were "incorrect and unfounded". He issued a clarification in a post on X late on Saturday night as speculation grew rife.
Gloria von Habsburg is the daughter of Archduke Karl of Austria and Francesca von Thyssen-Bornemisza. She belongs to the Habsburg-Lorraine family and is also the great-great-granddaughter of Karl I, who was Austria's last reigning emperor and Hungary's final king.
Social media was flooded with claims that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari had travelled to Liechtenstein, the tiny European principality situated between Switzerland and Austria, allegedly to settle details surrounding the wedding of his son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The speculation soon took a more specific turn, with some reports identifying 26-year-old former Austrian Archduchess Gloria von Habsburg as Bilawal's alleged future bride.
Adding to the rumours, Pakistan's Urdu-language daily Daily Ausaf published a report claiming that wedding arrangements had already begun. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said Zardari was on a private European trip reportedly linked to the alleged wedding plans. The report was subsequently removed.
The Pakistani Presidency later confirmed on August 27 that Zardari had travelled overseas on a private visit. However, its statement did not disclose where he had gone or provide any explanation for the trip.
Neither Bilawal Bhutto Zardari nor members of his family have publicly addressed the reports or offered any confirmation regarding the alleged marriage.
