Celebrity Reaction to Alleged Assault
Actor Bhumi Pednekar has expressed outrage following the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus in the Delhi-NCR region. Taking to Instagram Stories on Monday, she questioned how such incidents continue to occur despite repeated discussions on women's safety, writing, "How can we see this happen again and again and again! Shame!" Her reaction came as police in Delhi arrested the driver and conductor of the bus in connection with the alleged gang-rape.
Details of the Incident
According to Delhi Police, the teenager, a Class 11 student from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, had left her home on August 3 without informing her parents after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to her cousin's residence in Sector 63, Noida. Police said she accidentally got down at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida after it became dark and heavy rain began, and while stranded, she signalled to an approaching bus for help. The conductor allegedly told her the bus was headed towards Sector 63, and she boarded the vehicle, which police said had no other passengers.
The incident is reported to have occurred near Pari Chowk on August 4. The bus travelled nearly 47 km from Pari Chowk to Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal in Delhi, where the accused allegedly left the girl. She then went to the Kashmere Gate police station, where Delhi Police filed an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for alleged gang-rape, kidnapping, and assault.
Police alleged that both the driver and conductor sexually assaulted the teenager and threatened to kill her when she resisted. A medical examination confirmed the assault, according to police reports. Investigators used CCTV footage and other information to trace the bus to a parking area in Timarpur, north Delhi, where it was seized and sent for forensic examination. The teenager was produced before the Child Welfare Committee and handed over to her father.
Legal and Administrative Response
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the case, as reported by Bollywood Hungama and The Times of India. Additionally, a jurisdictional dispute has emerged between the police forces of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. UP Police have alleged that Delhi Police did not inform them about the incident despite the alleged assault taking place within the Gautam Buddh Nagar Commissionerate area, as per reports in Bollywood Hungama and Outlook India.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Niharika Bhatt confirmed to The Times of India that the teenager was travelling towards her cousin's home in Sector 63, Noida, and provided details of the girl's boarding of the bus and the subsequent investigation.
