Australia Wins Back-to-Back FIBA U18 Asia Cup Title
Australia successfully defended their FIBA U18 Asia Cup title, defeating China 89-79 in the final at the Veer Savarkar Indoor Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday night. The victory marked Australia's third overall championship and second consecutive title, completing a 'back-to-back' achievement.
Australia went on a seven-point run to take a 69-62 lead late in the third quarter, then pulled away in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Jai Fa'ale led Australia with 19 points, including four three-pointers out of ten attempts, and sparked the decisive rally. Bailey Hanson contributed 17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals, while Yahya Basaran added 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Basaran was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, boasting averages of 16.2 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.
Australia remained unbeaten in three appearances at the FIBA U18 Asia Cup, improving their record to 18-0 with a six-game sweep in the 2026 tournament. For China, Zhang Yizhaojie led with a game-high 20 points and 5 rebounds in the losing effort.
Hosts India finished 12th out of 16 teams, falling to Iran 66-83 in the qualification to the quarterfinal phase.
IOA Congratulates Australia and Commends Ahmedabad
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) extended its warmest congratulations to Australia on their victory. In a statement, IOA President Dr. P.T. Usha said: "I extend my warmest congratulations to Australia on their outstanding victory, and to the four nations that have secured their places at next year's FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Czechia."
The IOA also commended the city of Ahmedabad for hosting the championship from 13–23 August, describing it as "another milestone in India's emergence as a premier destination for global sporting events." The event brought together leading young basketball players from 16 nations across Asia, showcasing the depth of emerging talent in the region.
The tournament served as a qualification pathway, with the four semifinalists—Australia, China, New Zealand, and Korea—securing their places at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027 in Czechia.
The IOA thanked the Basketball Federation of India, the Local Organising Committee, the Government of Gujarat, and the volunteers for their contributions to the successful delivery of the competition. The tournament also engaged thousands of young Indian fans, reflecting the country's growing passion for sport.
