Barcelona complete signing of Gabriel Jesus
Barcelona have completed the permanent signing of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, with the player agreeing a three-year contract with the Spanish champions, the clubs confirmed on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old arrives at the Camp Nou after four seasons at the Emirates Stadium, having joined from Manchester City in 2022. Neither club disclosed the financial details of the deal, though British media reported Barcelona paid approximately £8.6 million ($11.5 million).
Jesus is Barcelona's sixth signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, Joao Cancelo and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Career at Arsenal and path to exit
During his time in north London, Jesus made 123 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. He appeared 27 times during Arsenal's Premier League title-winning campaign last season.
Before moving to Arsenal, Jesus spent six years at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles and scored 95 goals in 236 appearances across all competitions. In total, he made more than 200 Premier League appearances and scored over 70 league goals.
Jesus's departure follows a period in which he fell down the pecking order at Arsenal, with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres both preferred in the lone striker role. He was also hampered by injury problems during his time in north London, restricting him to only 14 Premier League appearances last season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed before the club's win over Aston Villa that Jesus was not training with the squad. When asked whether that meant the forward was leaving, Arteta said: "Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it's clear."
Official statements and other transfers
Barcelona confirmed the agreement in a statement: "Arsenal and FC Barcelona reach an agreement for the striker to become a blaugrana until 30 June 2029."
Arsenal also issued a farewell statement: "We thank Gabby for his contribution to the club during his four years with us and wish him and his family every happiness and success for the future."
Jesus follows midfielder Fabio Vieira out of the Emirates Stadium on deadline day. Vieira has joined German club Hamburg on a permanent deal after spending last season on loan there. The 26-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Porto for £34m in 2022, told his new club's official website: "I'm very happy to be back here. I already know the club, the fans and many of my team-mates, so it feels great to be part of it all again."
Context: Barcelona's other pursuits and Arsenal's window
The signing comes amid speculation over Barcelona's interest in Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with Atletico unwilling to sell the Argentine international to their domestic rivals. Arsenal have also been chasing Alvarez, but a deal is considered unlikely at this stage.
Barcelona had also been linked with a move for Jesus earlier in the window, and Napoli had shown interest in the Brazilian, but he has now joined last season's Spanish league champions after completing his medical on Monday.
Arsenal have added several players this summer, including Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis, while making Piero Hincapie's move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. The club have also signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier from Leeds United to serve as David Raya's understudy.
Aston Villa have also been active on deadline day, confirming the signings of winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain and centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton. Villa said Mbaye arrives for a fee of £47 million, while Harwood-Bellis could cost £29 million. The club confirmed that Harwood-Bellis will wear the number most recently worn by Ezri Konsa before his departure to Arsenal.
