Australia A squad announced for India series
Australia have named a 14-member squad for their upcoming series against India A in Puducherry, with several players boasting senior international experience, including pacer Ben Dwarshuis, Sam Konstas, and Nathan McSweeney. The announcement was made on Tuesday, according to reports, as the team prepares for a five-match Test tour of India early next year.
The squad features a mix of established names and emerging talent. Peter Handscomb, Brendan Doggett, Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Jhye Richardson, and Todd Murphy have all played Test cricket, while players such as Mitch Owen, Jack Edwards, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Philippe, Aaron Hardie, Nikhil Chaudhary, and Mahli Beardman have represented Australia in ODI or T20I cricket.
Tour schedule and purpose
Australia A will play two four-day matches and three one-day games, all scheduled in Puducherry. The first four-day match begins on September 22, followed by the second unofficial Test starting September 29. The three unofficial ODIs are set for October 6, 9, and 11.
Cricket Australia's National Selection Panel said the tour is an important part of exposing players to subcontinental conditions and preparing them for the challenges of playing in India. The tour is expected to help players acclimatise to conditions similar to those they may face during the senior team's Test series in India next year, according to reports.
George Bailey on the squads
Cricket Australia chairman George Bailey said the series would provide opportunities for both experienced international players and those pushing for higher honours.
"We are excited by these squads and what they might achieve out of the series. Many of these players have played international cricket, whilst for others it's a continuation of previous opportunities across Australia A and CAXI formats," Bailey said.
Bailey emphasised the strategic importance of the Australia A program, saying, "We consider these tours an important part of performance and developing game styles in sub-continent conditions as part of our continued investment into the Australia A program."
He added, "It's a strong representation of players who will be in contention to be part of the group we take to India next year or see as having potential for further opportunities into the future."
Notable selections and omissions
Peter Handscomb's selection is particularly significant, as he last featured for Australia during the previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour in 2023, playing in all four Tests. The 35-year-old is the most experienced member of the four-day squad and will have a chance to press his case for an international return.
Jhye Richardson's inclusion in the red-ball squad follows his return to first-class cricket after several shoulder surgeries. Todd Murphy, Sam Konstas, and Nathan McSweeney are among nine players who featured in last year's Australia A four-day matches in Lucknow to earn another opportunity.
Young fast bowler Mahli Beardman, who took two wickets on his T20I debut against Pakistan in Lahore in March, is named in the one-day squad. Sam Harper has been rewarded after a breakout domestic season, while Jason Sangha also features in the group.
The Times of India reported that Kurtis Patterson and Marnus Labuschagne are notable omissions from the squad.
