Deadly Bus Crash in South Sinai
At least 16 people were killed and 28 others injured when a bus overturned and crashed in Egypt's South Sinai region, according to reports from local authorities and Egypt's health ministry. The incident occurred on the Dahab-Nuweibaa road, a route that connects towns along the Red Sea coast, an area popular with tourists.
Local authorities confirmed the crash and said 20 ambulances were deployed to the scene. Paramedics provided first aid to the wounded and transported several passengers to hospital. The 28 injured people are being treated in hospital, while the 16 who died were pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
Government Response and Investigation
Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said all measures are being taken "to provide the highest level of medical care to the injured, to provide all necessary supplies and medicines, and to maintain continuous coordination with the relevant authorities in South Sinai Governorate." A spokesperson for the ministry stated that as soon as the report was received, the central operations room was activated and 20 ambulances were directed to the scene to evacuate the injured and provide first aid. The spokesperson added that all medical teams are operating at full capacity to handle the incident.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered an investigation into the crash, and the government said it would provide financial support to the families of the victims.
The cause of the crash remains unclear. The bus reportedly overturned, but no further details have been released.
The South Sinai region is a well-known tourist destination, home to resort cities such as Sharm el-Sheikh and popular for diving activities in the Red Sea.
Recent Road Accidents in Egypt
Last month, a road accident between two lorries in Egypt's Ismailia governorate killed 15 people and injured 32 others. In a separate incident, at least 18 people, many of them children, died after two pick-up trucks collided in Egypt, and another 30 were injured when trucks carrying workers crashed and flipped over in the Al-Dawawis area of Ismailia.
